The Wrong Path

Two Alaska river-swimming killer whales found dead

(Reuters) - Two of three killer whales that wandered far up an Alaska river have died, apparently succumbing to stresses associated with being out of their saltwater habitat, federal officials said on Sunday.

The surviving whale was seen swimming downriver Saturday toward possible safety, officials with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Fisheries Service said.

Biologists were concerned about the three whales because they had spent three weeks in southwest Alaska's salmon-rich Nushagak River and were lingering as far as 30 miles upstream from where the river flows into the saltwater of Bristol Bay.

It was the first time killer whales had been documented lingering far upriver in any area of Alaska, according to NOAA Fisheries officials.

Proverbs 1:10-19 (NLT)

 10 My child, if sinners entice you,
      turn your back on them!
 11 They may say, “Come and join us.
      Let’s hide and kill someone!
      Just for fun, let’s ambush the innocent!
 12 Let’s swallow them alive, like the grave;
      let’s swallow them whole, like those who go down to the pit of death.
 13 Think of the great things we’ll get!
      We’ll fill our houses with all the stuff we take.
 14 Come, throw in your lot with us;
      we’ll all share the loot.”

 15 My child, don’t go along with them!
      Stay far away from their paths.
 16 They rush to commit evil deeds.
      They hurry to commit murder.
 17 If a bird sees a trap being set,
      it knows to stay away.
 18 But these people set an ambush for themselves;
      they are trying to get themselves killed.
 19 Such is the fate of all who are greedy for money;
      it robs them of life.

What does today's God's Story teach us about being out of our environment?
When I first told my son about today's story he said, "Thanks a lot, Dad! Why did you have to tell me that?" He loves killer whales. It broke his heart to hear that this happened to these creatures. In fact, many of you may have had the same reaction. It is after all a sad story. When these killer whales wondered out of their natural habitat, they were asking for trouble. And I am no whale expert, but something tells me there was one whale leading the way and that the other two followed.

I wonder how many times today we will all encounter people in our lives who are wondering from their natural habitat? I'm talking about those who follow Jesus who put themselves in dagerous situations that could lead them into sin. Often the line between spending time with sinners in order to connect them to God's Story and spending time with sinners who could negatively influence us is a very fine line. In today's God's Story scripture we are reminded that we should not allow sinners to entice us to head down the wrong path. We also should be very active in keeping others from heading down that wrong path as well.

How can I connect today's God's Story to My Life?

  • What areas of your life do you consider your weak areas? What sins are you more enticed by? Ask God to be your strength to stay away from those areas.
  • Read the rest of Proverbs 1 several times today.

How can I connect today's God's Story to My Life?

  • Ask a close Christian friend to hold you accountable from being enticed by sin this week.
  • Do you have a close Christian friend who struggles with being pulled down the wrong path fairly often? Spend some time with them this week and ask what you can do to help keep them on the right path.
