Saving Lives

Jeremy Shockey saved a teammate’s life in lunch room
If Jeremy Shockey can be a lifesaver for the Carolina Panthers this season like he was for teammate Ben Hartsock today, it will be a heck of a year.

Hartsock is crediting Shockey with helping save him today after Hartsock, a fellow tight end, could not breathe in the team’s lunch room. A piece of pork tenderloin lodged in Hartsock’s throat and Shockey came to the rescue, the National Football Post has learned.

“He said to me a little while ago, ‘I really hope this doesn’t get out but if it does it’s going to be a funny story,’” said Chicago-based agent Mike McCartney, who represents Hartsock.

It's more of a story with a good ending than it is a funny one. Hartsock tried drinking some water to clear his throat and when that didn’t work it became evident to others in the room he could not breathe.

“He started to go to the bathroom and I don’t know if he collapsed, but he couldn’t breathe,” McCartney said. “Some new guy came and tried to give him the Heimlich. It didn’t work. Then, Shockey hit him in the back pretty hard and out came the meat. The Panthers told me it was really scary.

“Ben told me Shockey came over and gave me the Heimlich Maneuver and saved my life. He was in good spirits and he’s real thankful for Shockey.”

The story serves as a good reminder that it’s important to know how to administer the Heimlich because you never know when a friend or teammate could be in need.

It gave the Panthers plenty to chat about on the practice field. “Don’t choke, Hartsock,” became a new line in practice.

Romans 6:20-23 (NIV)
20 When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. 21 What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! 22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

2 Corinthians 5:11-15 (NIV)
11 Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade others. What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience. 12 We are not trying to commend ourselves to you again, but are giving you an opportunity to take pride in us, so that you can answer those who take pride in what is seen rather than in what is in the heart. 13 If we are “out of our mind,” as some say, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. 14 For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. 15 And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.
What does today's Gods Story scripture teach us about saving lives?
Are you prepared to jump out of your seat to save a life? I'm not asking if you are prepared to "give the Heimlich Maneuver." I am asking if you are prepared to pull a friend out of a sinful lifestyle that is threatening their eternal life. Today's verses remind us of what this DailyBide is all about.  The verses from 2 Corinthians 5 talk about Christ's love compelling us."  Are you truly compled by the love of Jesus in your own story that you can't help but share your story and most importantly, God's Story with your friends who aren't following Jesus?  Because, let's face it, the verses from Romans today remind us that without the gift of forgiveness that Jesus offers, we are living in sin. And the wages of that sin is death.
How can I connect today's God's Story scripture to My Life?
  • Take a walk God this weekend. On that walk, talk with God about how thankful you are for His gift for you in Jesus. Thank Him for that gift and for saving you from death that is the result of sin.
  • If you've never done this, take some time this weekend to write out your story. You might be surprised at how many ways God has been working in your story all along.
How can I connect Today's Story, My Story, and God's Story to Others?
  • Do you have a friend with whom you have been sharing your story, but maybe not enough of God's Story?  Spend some time with that friend this weekend sharing some of God's Story.
  • Do you know someone who is far from God in your school or neighborhood who isn't connected to a follower of Jesus? Spend some time praying for that person this weekend. Ask God if there might be something in store for you to connect with them.
