Saving Lives

Firefighters Rescue Stranded Man From Creek
SOUTHERN INDIANA — Gisella Lockman had know idea when she woke up Saturday morning she would be saving a life by that afternoon.

But sure enough as she came down Blackiston Mill Road on her way to taking her son Brett to an area skating rink, the two passed by a terrifying sight while crossing a bridge over Silver Creek.

“I was looking over the water, seeing how high it was and then I see him holding onto a limb,” the younger Lockman said.

“All we could see was just his face, just his head,” Gisella Lockman added. Right away she stopped and called 911.

That brought members of the New Albany Fire Department to the scene. They used a small boat to reach the man — who’s name wasn’t available by press time Saturday — and pulled him from the perilous post.

He was actually hanging on to this first group of trees, then a big current came — a bunch of debris — and it knocked him off and he grabbed another tree, Gisella Lockman said.

“He looked like a dog, paddling in water. He was really struggling. He kept saying, ‘I’m cold, I’m cold.’”

The rescue took place amid blinding rainfall, rising water and swift currents, as storms continued throughout the day.

“The thing that was scary was all the large pieces of wood that were coming down,” said Kevin Ricketts, another passerby who saw the rescue take place. “Then when they were trying to throw life preservers or floatation devices everything was getting tangled up in the debris and the current. It was quite a scene they had.”

The man was conscious when he was pulled to the banks. Officials said he was taken to Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services, as he was complaining of back pain.

It’s unclear exactly how he ended up in the water, though some witnesses reported he jumped off the narrow bridge when a vehicle that was passing him came too close.

Luke 24:44-49
44Then he said to them,  "These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled." 45Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46and said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, 47and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high."

Acts 1:6-11
6So when they had come together, they asked him, "Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?" 7He said to them,  "It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." 9And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11and said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven."
What does today's God's Story scriptures teach us about our role in his plan?
As we come off of Easter weekend it is often easy to turn our attention to eating the candy we may have received that to continue thinking about what we might do to share God's Story to those who need to be rescued.  Following that first Easter, Jesus hung out with his disciples and shared some important teachings with them.  One of which was that they, and now we, are his "witnesses" to all the earth.  Today's Story is a great reminder of our role in God's Story.  God is still the one doing the "saving," the rescuing.  We are just His witnesses to those who need to know His Story.  Who is God putting on your heart right now that needs to be rescued?
How can I connect today's God's Story scripture to My Life?
Think back to when you were "rescued" and thank God for how He has been at work in your story.
How can I connect Today's Story, My Story, and God's Story to Others?
  • Start a conversation using today's story.
  • Share with a friend how you were rescued and entered into God's incredible Love Story.
  • Make a list today of those in your everyday life who need to be rescued from their sin.
  • Pray for those on that list everyday this week, asking God how you might be able to share His Story with them in the course of your everday conversations.
