Searching

A man-made disaster, a global sport, pop culture's leading ladies (and one young gent), and gadgets starting with an "i."
Since 2001, Yahoo! has been tallying up the top searches of the year, providing a snapshot of a culture in motion. Over the past decade, the No. 1 slot has been occupied by companies (music download service Kazaa), TV shows ("American Idol"), and celebrities (Britney Spears, often). In 2010, some 631 million people checked in. Among the billions of queries they pursued, the story of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill led the year's top 10 -- the first time that a news story has taken the No. 1 slot.

Top 10 Searches (Yahoo!)
1. BP Oil Spill
2. World Cup
3. Miley Cyrus
4. Kim Kardashian
5. Lady Gaga
6. iPhone
7. Megan Fox
8. Justin Bieber
9. American Idol
10. Britney Spears

Matthew 6:33 (ESV)
33But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

Matthew 13:44-46 (ESV)
The Parable of the Hidden Treasure
44"The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

The Parable of the Pearl of Great Value
45"Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, 46who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about searching?
So what are you searching for?  No, not on the internet. What are you searching for in this life?  Our challenge to you today, is to make 2011 a year of seeking the Kingdom of God above and beyond all else.  Here's what the Life Application Study Bible has to say about such a search ...

The Kingdom of Heaven is more valuable than anything else we can have, and a person must be willing to give up everything to obtain it.  The man who discovered the treasure in the filed stumbled upon it by accident, but knew its value when he found it.  The merchant was earnestly searching for the pearl of great value, and when he found it, he sold everything he had to purchase it.

Are you searching for a deeper relationship with God like the guys in these parables?
How can I connect today's God's Story scripture to My Life?
As the new year begins, make seeking the Kingdom of God your top priority by considering the following actions this week ...
1. Read John 15 and remind yourself of what it means to Abide in Jesus.
2. Set a specific time this week to spend it in silence and solitude with Jesus.
3. Talk with Jesus about your hopes and dreams for the coming year.
How can I connect Today's Story, My Story, and God's Story to Others?
As you hear friends begin to talk about their "new year resolutions" this week, be prepared and willing to talk about your own commitment to go deeper into God's Story.

The Daily Bide is brought to you by a team of writers from Youth for Christ/USA. The writers all have various years of experience in youth ministry but share a common bond in serving Jesus and discovering what it means to abide deeply everyday and to connect God's Story with those around them. A number of the Daily Bide writers have also written portions of our 3Story® resources. You can check out our resources at the 3Story.org website or connect with our writers at 3story@yfc.net. If you have a question or a story you would like to share, please reference the Daily Bide date in your email.

YFC works with young people on campus and in the community in over one hundred countries around the world so that they might have an opportunity to become a follower of Christ and be a part of a local church.
