"Where Were You?"

This weekend was full of remembrances of one of the darkest days in our country's history, September 11, 2001.  I noticed many people on the popular social network site, Facebook, quoting a song written and recorded by country artist, Alan Jackson, "Where were you when the world stop turning, on the September day?"  Many answered.  For those who remember that day, we remember where we were and the thoughts and feelings that stirred in us that day.

Personally, we were expecting our third child at the time and we honestly wondered what the world would be like when he arrived a few months later.  There was uncertainty, fear, sorrow, grief, despair.  But it is in just those type of emotions that the Father likes to show up.

1 Corinthians 13:13 (ESV)

So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about love?

In that same song, Alan Jackson shared his own questions, his own thoughts and his own faith.  He reminded us of today's scripture in the chorus of the song,

"But I know Jesus and I talk to God
And I remember this from when I was young
Faith, Hope, and Love are some goods things He gave us,
And the Greatest is Love."

In the midst of the uncertainty of our country nine years later, God's love, poured into His followers, overflowing for the world to see, to feel, to experience, is the greatest way to make His Story known.

How can I connect today's God's Story scripture to My Story?

  • Write down some of the key moments in your life when you were most aware of God's Love.
  • Spend some time this week thanking God for His Love in those moments.
  • Ask God to let His Love overflow from your life into the lives of others this week.

How can I connect Today's Story, My Story, and God's Story to Others?

  • Ask some of your friends if they saw any 9/11 memorial coverage in the media this weekend. Talk with them about what they heard or saw.
  • Write down the names of three friends who you believe need to experience God's Love this week.  Ask God for opportunities to share His Story with them this week.
  • Take some time to pray for the families impacted by the tragedy of 9/11.
