Stand As One!

"Stand As One"

In a "Kickoff Message From All NFL Players" to their fans, the NFL Players Association stated yesterday that "The Players and fans will STAND AS ONE."  As the Saints and Vikings took the field last night in the season opener, immediately after the national anthem, the players stood on the field, with index fingers pointed up to visually state, "We Stand As One!"  For just a moment, they put aside their concern for the first impression the fans would have of their teams this season.  While they are competitors on the field, the players association has band together in light of an uncertain future in benefit negotiations.

Philippians 2:1-4

Have the Attitude of Christ
1 Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ? Any comfort from his love? Any fellowship together in the Spirit? Are your hearts tender and compassionate? 2 Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose.

3 Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. 4 Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about standing as one?

What if we, as the body of Christ, took the words from today's God's Story scripture to heart? As Paul wrote to the church in Philippi, he urged them to STAND AS ONE!  Look at what Tyndale's Life Application Study Bible notes have to say about the opening verses of Philippians 2.

Many people - even Christians - live only to make a good on others or to please themselves.  But selfishness brings discord.  Paul therefore stressed spiritual unity, asking the Philippians to love one another and to be one in spirit and purpose.  When we work together, caring for the problems of others as if they were our problems, we demonstrate Christ's example of putting others first, and we experience unity.  Don't be so concerned about making a good impression or meeting your own needs that you strain relationships in God's family.

How can I connect today's God's Story scripture to My Story?

  • Do some soul searching. Ask God to reveal any selfishness you might be feeling toward other members of God's family.  Ask for and accept God's forgiveness for that selfishness.
  • Read the rest of Philippians 2 and write down some ways that God is challenging you to be more like Jesus.

How can I connect Today's Story, My Story, and God's Story to Others?

  • Do you have some friends from other churches in your community?  Pull them together to brainstorm some ideas for how you can work together, as the Body of Christ, in your community.
  • Go beyond the brainstorming and, before the weekend is over, have a day and time set for whatever project you come up with. Need some help? Talk with a trusted adult in your life for some ideas.
