Angels to the Rescue
Father of Family Rescued From Burning SUV Says Trapped Son, 4, Saved by Angels
MILWAUKEE — The father of a 4-year-old boy saved from a burning SUV in Milwaukee says his son was surrounded by angels. James "Chris" Harper said Tuesday words can't express his gratitude to off-duty firefighters Joel and John Rechlitz and others.
Pediatric surgeon David Gourlay says 4-year-old D.J. Harper is in serious but stable condition with burns over 20 percent of his body. He says many of the burns are deep and are on the scalp, face and upper body.
Harper's mother, 32-year-old Angela Baldessari of Kingsport, Tenn., was driving Sunday when her SUV hit a tree and burst into flames.
She and her 2-year-old daughter were pulled out but rescue workers had to cut the boy's car-seat restraints to save him.
The Rechlitz brothers suffered burns on their hands and forearms.

1 Those who live in the shelter of the Most High
will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 This I declare about the Lord:
He alone is my refuge, my place of safety;
he is my God, and I trust him.
3 For he will rescue you from every trap
and protect you from deadly disease.
4 He will cover you with his feathers.
He will shelter you with his wings.
His faithful promises are your armor and protection.
5 Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night,
nor the arrow that flies in the day.
6 Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness,
nor the disaster that strikes at midday.
7 Though a thousand fall at your side,
though ten thousand are dying around you,
these evils will not touch you.
8 Just open your eyes,
and see how the wicked are punished.
9 If you make the Lord your refuge,
if you make the Most High your shelter,
10 no evil will conquer you;
no plague will come near your home.
11 For he will order his angels
to protect you wherever you go.
12 They will hold you up with their hands
so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.
13 You will trample upon lions and cobras;
you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet!
14 The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me.
I will protect those who trust in my name.
15 When they call on me, I will answer;
I will be with them in trouble.
I will rescue and honor them.
16 I will reward them with a long life
and give them my salvation.”
What does today's God's Story Scripture teach us about angels?
Here's what the Life Application Study notes have to say about Today's God Story Scripture ...
One of the functions of angels is to watch over believers. (See Hebrews 1:14) There are examples of guardian angels in Scripture (1 Kings 19:5; Daniel 6:22); Matthew 18:10; Luke 16:22), although there is no indication that one angel is assigned to each believer. Angels can also be God's messengers. Angels are not visible, except on special occasions (Luke 2:9). Verses 11 and 12 were quoted by Satan when he tempted Jesus (Luke 4:10). It is comforting to know that God watches over us even in times of great stress and fear.
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
- Thank God for the angels He has created to watch over believers.
- Take some time to look up the verses listed above and read more about what God's Story has to say about angels.
How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture and our story to others?
