Beyonce would like to be known as "Sasha Fierce"

Just like the "Seinfeld" episode where George wanted everyone to call him "T-Bone," Beyonce Knowles would like to be known by a bold new name.

The R&B singer has christened herself "Sasha Fierce" for her new double album, "I Am ... Sasha Fierce," due in U.S. stores on November 18, and has released a lengthy justification for the comical moniker.

"I have someone else that takes over when it's time for me to work and when I'm on stage, this alter ego that I've created that kind of protects me and who I really am," the former Destiny's Child frontwoman said in a statement.

Identity Crisis

Will the real you please stand up?

2 Corinthians 5:17

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. (ESV)

What does God's Story scripture teach us about our identity as Christ-followers?

Beyonce has created a "new identity"...one that she believes will protect her and who she really is". Doesn't that make you wonder...does she really know who she is...and...is this really protecting her...or is it keeping her from living freely as God intended?

As Christ-followers, God has given us a new identity and this keeps us from needing to make up "an image" like so many around us are working to maintain. The TRUTH about who you are comes straight from God's Word.

  • You have been saved and are free from sin! (Rom.6:6-7)
  • You are God's children. (John 1:12-13)
  • You are God's friend. (John 15:15)
  • You have the promise of eternal life. (John 5:24)
  • You are here for a purpose. (Eph.2:10)
  • God lives in you! (John 14:26)
  • Nothing can ever separate you from Him. (Rom.8:38)

And that's just a few promises that God gives us about who we are in Him...there's much more where that came from!

How does God's Story connect with my story?

  • Start living out your new identity! Remember every day that you are a child of the King and that you can live in freedom!
  • Stop wearing masks. Some of us have a certain mask that we wear at school, another one we have for soccer practice, yet another one we put on at home...and, of course, there's that one we have worn at church since we can remember. We think, like Beyonce, that this protects us, but the reality is that it keeps us from really living. Being the same in every situation...and being real about wearing the identity that God has given us...is a freeing way to live.
  • Start living to please God and Him alone. In I Thess.2:4 Paul reminds us that we are not trying to please men, but God, who tests our hearts. In the end, the opinions of others won't matter and only the opinion of our Father will.

How does today's story, God's Story scripture and my story connect with others?

  • One of the best ways to live a Christian life that attracts your friends to Christ is to live authentically. They can sense a phony from a mile away. At the same time, they can see a genuine life just as clearly...and when they see that in you, they will want to know more.
  • As you are taking off your mask, it may allow your friends to trust you with their junk. Imagine if they see you as "having it all together" and then you share with them how that really isn't the case...this may free them up to share some of their hurts, fears and failures too...but their masks that are "protecting them" won't come off until they see you lead in this.
  • Think of a friend that you know is living behind a mask...and pray that they may one day know the freedom of living for God alone and having a NEW IDENTITY like you do!
