Diesel fuel was on heavy discount at a rural Wisconsin convenience store -- just 59 cents a gallon. That is, until the owner discovered he had left off the other $3 while changing the price in his computer.
Mohinder Singh estimates 50 to 75 customers took advantage of the mistake at his Lyons Shell Plaza last weekend, costing him more than $4,000.
He says he changed the price about noon Saturday, and it stayed at 59 cents until he arrived at 7 a.m. Sunday and saw a warning light indicating the diesel tank had only 200 gallons left.
Eighteen-year-old Jordan Koster knew something was wrong when he filled his pickup's 30-gallon tank for only $10. He told his father, and his father advised him to make things right.
The teen stopped Monday and paid the full amount.Going the Extra Mile
James 4:17
Anyone then who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it sins (NIV).
What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about doing what is right?
Today's God's Story scripture makes it all too clear that not doing something (for any reason), when we know it is the right thing to do, is a sin. Although 18 year old Jordan Koster may not have done anything wrong (in the eyes of most) he understood that the way he capitalized on Mr. Singh's mistake just wasn't right. Thankfully, Jordan had a father who, obviously, had worked hard to teach him the difference between right and wrong, and who encouraged him to do the right thing. Likewise, we have a Father (God) who only wants the best for us and who gives us His Spirit and Word to teach us how to live righteously . . . so that when the situation arises, we will know the good we ought to do and do it!
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture with our lives?
- Is there a time in this last week that you failed to do what you knew was right? Perhaps it was even something as simple as giving a hug to someone you knew was hurting, praying for a friend, or even cleaning your room when your mom asked you to? Pray and ask God to forgive your sin - thank Him for giving His Spirit to help you discern right from wrong.
- Sometimes doing what you know is right isn't such an easy thing - it may take a lot of guts to go the extra mile (like Jordan did) and act when you know something isn't right. Pray for God to give you the courage you need the next time you're faced with the decision to act and do the right thing.
How can we connect today's story, God's Story, and our story to others?
God gives us opportunitites all the time to do what's right and to help others. We don't know if Jordan is a Christian, but we can be sure that his actions spoke volumes into Mr. Singh's life when he returned to pay what he owed him for the gas!
When we do what is truly right, our story will naturally shine God's Story to others! The next time you feel the Spirit nudging you to do something (whether easy or extremely uncomfortable and difficult), DO IT and see how your story, fully enveloped in God's Story, connects with those around you!
