Stilt-walker completes 830 miles across Michigan

IRONWOOD — A 24-year-old Blissfield man has completed an 830-mile trek on aluminum stilts across Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas to make people aware of cerebral palsy.

United Cerebral Palsy of Michigan reports that Neil Sauter has ended his eight-week journey Friday in Ironwood, on the Upper Peninsula border with Wisconsin. He began walking in early May from Lambertville in southeast Michigan.

He passed through Muskegon on May 19 and visited Lincoln Park Elementary School, where he was given $1,424 raised in a five-day student and staff coin drive. The money was presented to him by his uncle, Keith Sauter, a fifth-grade teacher at the school.

At an assembly in his honor, he explained that he's hoping the money he raises will provide more wheelchairs and walkers for those diagnosed with cerebral palsy and are in need.

"Everyday you use tools to help you to be successful. If someone is using a wheelchair, don't be afraid of them. The wheelchair is a tool and they just need help getting from place to place," he said.

Sauter has raised $16,000 for United Cerebral Palsy of Michigan. A 3-1 matching federal grant pushes that total to $64,000.

Donations may be sent to UCP Michigan, 4970 Northwind Drive, Suite 102, Lansing, MI, 48823. For more information, go to Sauter's Web site.

Walk upright!

It brings God's perspective and blessing...

Psalm 84:11-12

11 For the Lord God is a sun and shield;
the Lord bestows favor and honor.
No good thing does he withhold
from those who walk uprightly.
12 O Lord of hosts,
blessed is the one who trusts in you! (ESV)

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about the importance of living to please Christ?

"Walking uprightly" is all about living an obedient life for the purpose of pleasing Christ in all of our thoughts and actions.

"Walking uprightly" allows us to look to our loving Father to receive His protection, His power, His blessings, and all that He loves to give us because He loves His children!

"Walking uprightly" is the key to being able to trust God, no matter what. With His Spirit controlling us, we see life with a Kingdom view. Bent over, we see only our limited and self-absorbed perspective.

Neil Sauter is literally walking upright and look at what's happening with his cause...

Imagine what will happen with Christ's cause when we do the same.

How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?

  • Let Jesus help you understand any way in which you may be walking "low". Confess any disobedience and let Him forgive your aching back!
  • Watch out for attack from the enemy. Satan will surprise you when you are not walking Christ's way.
  • Try walking on stilts...believe me, you'll remember today's scripture.

How can we connect today's story, God's Story and our story to others?

Use today's story about Neil, the stilt-walker to talk about today's God's Story scripture with some of your friends and family who are Christ-followers. Be vulnerable and share more of your story, which may include some painful spiritual memories of not walking uprightly. Be sure to talk about how Jesus helps you learn to stand up and walk right again!
