Favre decides to call it a career
After flirting with retirement for years, Brett Favre means it this time. The Green Bay Packers quarterback quit after a 17-season career in which he dazzled fans with his grit, heart and rocket of an arm.
The retirement was first reported by FOXSports.com's Jay Glazer.
"I know I can still play, but it's like I told my wife, I'm just tired mentally. I'm just tired," Favre said.
Tuesday's surprise move comes after the 38-year-old three-time MVP set several league records, including most career touchdown passes, in one of his most successful seasons.
Coach Mike McCarthy said Favre informed him of the decision by telephone Monday night.
"He said it was time for him to hang up the cleats," McCarthy said at a news conference Tuesday afternoon. "He's mentally tired, with all the little things that go into everyday preparation."
Packers general manager Ted Thompson thanked Favre for 16 years of wonderful memories with the team.
"His accomplishments are legendary," Thompson said. "And it's the passion with which he played that made everyone a Favre fan."

Favre = Champion!
His name is hard to pronounce but it will be remembered...
Proverbs 10:7 (NLT)
7 We have happy memories of the godly,
but the name of a wicked person rots away.
Proverbs 22:1 (NLT)
1 Choose a good reputation over great riches;
being held in high esteem is better than silver or gold.
What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about how to have a good name? How's your reputation?
The answer is pretty simple, but impossible to obtain without God.
If we choose to let God's Spirit enable us to live a godly life, our names will have a good reputation attached to them. People who come in contact with us will have good memories of us. They will know they can trust us. They will feel like their lives were blessed because of a friendship with us.
The flip side is that if we choose to not live under the control of God's Spirit within us, our names will have a lousy reputation attached to them. In fact, today's scripture says that our names will be rotten. If we are self-centered, two-faced, or dishonest, the time will come when we realize that we don't have a good reputation. Others will not trust us and we'll find ourselves living a pretty lonely life without friends.
Brett Favre's name is going to be remembered long after he's gone because of his reputation of being an amazing competitor driven to excel and win while having fun doing it!
After our lives are done, will people remember our name? Will it be associated with something negative or godly? Will we be known as someone who always gave their best - driven by the goal of bringing glory to God?
This is our purpose for daily living! And we can have fun doing it!
What will be the reputation that others attach to your life story?
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
- Write down anything about your reputation that is not godly. Review it regularly to let God show you how He is helping change your reputation to bring honor to Him.
- Talk to God right now in prayer. Thank Him for making His Word
How can we connect today's story and God's Story scripture and our story to others?
- Remember that living a godly life is how God blesses your name and reputation, but Jesus said that the world will still hate you for being His disciple. Even though you will be hated by some for following Jesus, you will have a good reputation if you consistently walk the talk.
- Think about someone you know who does not have a godly reputation. Pray for this person regularly and rather than judging or ignoring him or her, reach out with Christ-like love as a friend.
- Because Favre's retirement story is all over the news, look for opportunities to use this in conversation to with your friends (even your non-sports friends will have heard of Brett Favre!). Talk about what it must feel like to have millions of people talking about your heart and accomplishments while you're still alive! Since retirement is probably not in your vocabulary, talk about what people think or say when they hear your name....what will they think or say about your reputation if you died this next week? This could be very interesting and help you learn more of their stories...be ready to share more of yours....
