'Texas Snake Man' Sets Record By Sitting In Tub For 45 Minutes With 87 Rattlers

DUBLIN, Texas -- Another day, another bizarre world record for Jackie Bibby, the "Texas Snake Man."

Bibby spent about 45 minutes in a see-through bathtub with 87 rattlesnakes, fully clothed, shattering his own record by 12 snakes just in time for Guinness World Records Day. A Guinness official certified the record.

The snakes crawled under his arms, between his legs and anywhere else they could slither, Bibby said. None bit him.

"They can go wherever they want as long as they don't start biting," Bibby said. "The key to not biting is for me to stay still. Rapid movement scares a rattlesnake. If you move real slow and gentle, that doesn't seem to bother them."

Bibby sat in the dry tub with a pillow behind him, wearing regular clothing. The snakes were not defanged and still contained their venom, he said.

The clear bathtub was specially made several years ago for Bibby by the Guinness folks for a televised segment. He has used it for subsequent attempts at the record for sitting in a tub with snakes.

"I have set several world records in that bathtub," Bibby said.

Afraid of snakes?

Some day, you won't have to be.

Isaiah 11:6-10 (NLT)

6 In that day the wolf and the lamb will live together;
the leopard will lie down with the baby goat.
The calf and the yearling will be safe with the lion,
and a little child will lead them all.
7 The cow will graze near the bear.
The cub and the calf will lie down together.
The lion will eat hay like a cow.
8 The baby will play safely near the hole of a cobra.
Yes, a little child will put its hand in a nest of deadly snakes without harm.
9 Nothing will hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain,
for as the waters fill the sea,
so the earth will be filled with people who know the Lord.

10 In that day the heir to David’s throne
will be a banner of salvation to all the world.
The nations will rally to him,
and the land where he lives will be a glorious place.

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about a future time of unique peace?

Are you ready to sit in a tub full of rattle snakes? Me neither!

Right now, we live in a world where we can get killed by dangerous animals. It's because of the reality of our earthly life being a place that is painful, broken, fragile, violent and dying.

Because of sin, this world as we know it, will always be full of something gone wrong until Jesus returns to reign in peace. Christ's new Kingdom will look very different than our current situation.

To get a glimpse of Isaiah's "snapshot" of the future, let's look at Tyndale's LIFE APPLICATION STUDY BIBLE notes:

11:6-10 A golden age is yet to come, a time of peace when children will play with formerly dangerous animals. Not all of this was fulfilled at Christ's first coming. For example, nature has not returned to its intended balance and harmony (see Romans 8:9-22). Such perfect tranquility is possible only when Christ reigns over the earth.

Can you picture it? If you belong to Christ, you will see it!

How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
  • Praise God that Christ's reign will ultimately bring peace! Ask His Spirit to help you focus on the peace that comes with knowing that you're in God's future picture when you belong to Christ, even if you never want to play with snakes!
  • Get a picture of a snake, tiger, lion, or another dangerous animal and use it as a screen saver or as a poster in your room. Whenever you see it, let God remind you that He will give you peace now and forever!

How can we connect today's story and God's Story scripture and our story to others?

Ask your friends and family if they heard about today's (snakes in a tub) story? If not, fill them in and and then ask them if they can imagine a day when they could play with rattle snakes and not fear them? If they are interested, use today's scripture to tell them how some day Christ will reign over a Kingdom where this is possible. Be ready to share more of your story of how you became a follower of Jesus and how you look to God's Story for daily direction and a glimpse of the future.
