Kung Fu Artist Ends Hair-Raising Career to Become Nun

KAIFENG, China (Reuters) - A Chinese kung fu artist who tows cars and cuts paper with her braided hair has given up her crowning glory to officially become a Buddhist nun.

Zhang Tingting completely shaved off the hair that she says has "kung fu power" and extraordinary strength so that she can enter a temple as a nun.

"I really always wanted to cut my hair off, but I couldn't because of the performances. But this time I've given it up for good," Zhang told Reuters. "It feels great."

The 52-year-old artist has performed across China for decades, after taking up martial arts when she was 17. She began living the life of a nun two years ago.

Before bidding her meter-long braid farewell, she pulled six passenger cars some 50 meters (164 ft) through a Beijing suburb, then repeated the feat with ten cars, for about 30 meters, in her hometown of Kaifeng, Henan Province.

Although Zhang and her plait are now permanently separated, the hair has been preserved. Authorities are considering sending it on a pilgrimage to sacred Buddhist sites in Tibet, or displaying it in a local museum.

The Guinness World Record for the heaviest single vehicle to have been pulled by a person's hair is held by He Jianma from China, who dragged an 8.28-tonne bus 30 meters this May.

Matthew 16:24, 25

Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it.

What Does God Say About Giving Up Things?

I love kung fu! I have always been fascinated with martial arts movies where the usually smaller hero can take out 20 people with his or her bare hands. The blocks and fancy kicks mixed in with the distinct sounds of "aiyyyyy" are always fun for me.

But that really isn't the point of this story.

The point of today's story is that a talented kung fu artist gave up something so she could pursue her faith as a nun. And although the woman in our story is not Christian, we can learn from her.

Christ is always asking us to give up something for Him. Whether it's the rich young ruler whom he asks to sell all he has or the passage we read today where he asks us to deny ourselves and take up the cross.

It is easy to get caught up with being overly self-righteous by giving things up for God. If we do that I think we miss the point. As a disciple of Christ, God wants our obedience. To deny ourself is to abandon our natural desire to seek the advancement of ourselves in favor of giving glory to God.

This can often be difficult for sure. But the flip side of that is that when we are frustrated by life we can often look to ourselves as the problem. Are we seeking glory for ourselves or giving honor to God?

  • What ways have you been seeking to honor yourself more than bringing honor to God?
  • Give these areas to God and ask His forgiveness. Ask for Him to be honored in these activities or maybe even abandoned.
  • Pray that God would be honored in your conversation with others today. Instead of seeking the approval of others seek the approval of God in the way you interact with the people around you. Abandon your notions of what is important and ask what might God consider important. This can often make a huge difference in how our day unfolds.

Get Me Outta Here!

Bear climbs ladder to escape Colorado skate park

SNOWMASS, Colo. – A bear that wandered into a sunken skateboard park and got stuck was rescued when officials lowered a ladder so it could climb out.

The bear was discovered Tuesday morning in the Colorado resort town of Snowmass. Officials say it apparently was in the park all night, and couldn't get out because of the steep concrete sides.

Workers from the Parks and Recreation Department lowered a long ladder. The bear eventually climbed the ladder and wandered away.

No injuries were reported to people or the bear.

Romans 7:21-25 (New Living Translation)

21 I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. 22 I love God’s law with all my heart. 23 But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. 24 Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? 25 Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. So you see how it is: In my mind I really want to obey God’s law, but because of my sinful nature I am a slave to sin.

What does God's Story teach us about our need to be rescued?

Have you ever been lured into a situation only to feel that you were stuck? Stuck in a sin that you couldn't get out of alone. The natural tendancy is to try to get out of it by ourselves. But we can't. The bear in today's story needed that ladder; and when we are stuck in sinful habits, we too need help.  Paul himself felt stuck in his sin. His words resound ... "Who will .-deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!"  Isn't is amazing that Jesus has provided a way out of our sin.

Connecting today's story and God's Story to my story

  • Are you currently stuck in a struggle with a particular sin? Confess it to the Father and receive His forgiveness.
  • Confess your sin to someone in your life that you trust and ask them to keep you accountable from falling back into that sin.
  • Read the rest of Romans 7 this weekend.

Connecting today's story, God's Story and my story with my friend's story

  • Is there a friend with whom you've been sharing God's Story and Your Story who is stuck in sin? Give them a ladder ... Open a conversation about how Jesus has provided a way out.
  • Do you have a friend who is following Jesus who has fallen into a struggle with a particular sin? Ask them how you can help them get out.
  • Find a friend and read Romans 7 together and talk about your struggles.
  • Remember: It's much more important for us to tell our friends how much we need Jesus, than it is to tell them how much they need Jesus!

Comedian Gets Sued By Mother-In-Law

LOS ANGELES – "Take my mother-in-law — please," isn't a joke you're likely to hear often these days from Sunda Croonquist. The veteran comic is being sued by her mother-in-law after making her the punchline of too many jokes.

The mother-in-law is accusing Croonquist of spreading false, defamatory and racist lies with in-law jokes that have become a staple of her routine in nightclubs and on television channels like Comedy Central.

To Croonquist, the in-law jokes seemed like a natural routine after living through one comical culture-clash moment after another: She is half-black, half-Swedish, grew up Roman Catholic and married into a Jewish family.

And she's not shy about making the in-laws the butt of her jokes.

Take the one about her mother-in-law's reaction to news she was pregnant with her first child: "OK, now that we know you're having a little girl I want to know what you're naming that little tchotchke. Now we don't want a name that's difficult to pronounce like Shaniqua. We're thinking a name short but delicious. Like Hadassah or Goldie."

Or her first visit to her mother-in-law's house: "I walk in, I say, 'Thank you so much for having me here, Ruthie.' She says,

'The pleasure's all mine, have a seat.'" Then, in a loud aside, 'Harriet, put my pocketbook away.'"

Croonquist said there was a time when her in-laws would laugh with everyone else at the black-member-of-a-Jewish-family jokes. "They played my tape at Passover one year, and they loved it!" she said.

But things changed after Croonquist, promoting upcoming gigs in New Jersey, posted information on her Web site that, according to her in-laws, allowed pretty much anyone to figure out the identities of her in-laws.

They sued in April in U.S. District Court in New Jersey, where they live. The action seeks unspecified damages and demands that Croonquist remove any offensive statements from her Web site, routines and recordings.

Croonquist says she would drop any language her family finds offensive, but refuses to pay any settlement. Her lawyer has filed a motion to have the suit dismissed, and a judge is scheduled to hear it on Sept. 8.

Ephesians 5:4 (NIV)

Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.

Psalm 126:2 (NIV)

Our mouths were filled with laughter,
our tongues with songs of joy.
Then it was said among the nations,
"The LORD has done great things for them."

What Does God Say About Joking?

Today's story has a dual meaning for us today. It is sort of comical that someone who is paid to make people laugh is being sued by her own family,

At first glance it appears a little ridiculous to me. I mean come on lady, toughen up! She's just trying to make people laugh.

But then I think about our own relationships (especially those that are close to us) and how fragile they can be if we are always the brunt of their jokes. There is a fine line to joyful poking fun and constant belittling.

And that is our lesson today. I believe God wants us to laugh at ourselves and others but not at their expense. We should be on guard of what we say and how it effects others. Granted, some people can be overly sensitive, but we should monitor our words and actions.

While the mother-in-law's actions in the story are a bit extreme, our friends and families response may be similar. We may not get sued but our relationships suffer because we have not taken the time to monitor our words and actions.

Especially as school starts and with it the constant joking, may we be wise enough to make sure we honor others instead of bring them down.

  • Consider your conversation with friends and family lately. Have you noticed anyone becoming overly irritated and/or sensitive to your joking?
  • Ask forgiveness of others that you might have offended by joking around too much.
  • Look for ways to encourage others and build them. When joking with others make sure that it's not too negative but that others are refreshed and not frustrated.

Swept Away

EDGARTOWN, Mass. – A large wave fueled by Hurricane Bill swept spectators out to sea at a Maine park Sunday as the storm-churned surf attracted onlookers and daredevils along the Eastern Seaboard.

A man, a woman and a 7-year-old girl were pulled from the sea near Acadia National Park, Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Shane Coxon said, and rescue crews were searching for others believed to be lost in the waves.

"This is absolutely the effects of Hurricane Bill" coupled with the effect of high tide, park ranger Sonya Berger said.

The girl was unresponsive when she was rescued, the woman appeared to have a broken leg and the man had a previous heart condition that appeared to be acting up, Coxon said.

The hurricane was also blamed for the death of a 54-year-old swimmer Saturday in Florida. Volusia County Beach Patrol Capt. Scott Petersohn said Angel Rosa of Orlando was unconscious when he washed ashore in rough waves fueled by Bill at New Smyrna Beach, along the central Florida coast. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Lifeguards there also rescued a handful of other swimmers believed to have suffered spinal injuries.

The three rescued in Maine were part of an early afternoon crowd of thousands who lined the national park's rocky shoreline to watch the high surf and crashing waves.

Kaiser said many people didn't even move when they were splashed by the waves and instead seemed to laugh it off.

Others on shore suffered minor injuries after being knocked to the rocks by the waves, Acadia National Park Chief Ranger Stuart West said.

Despite repeated warnings, people gathered in Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia, and along the boardwalk in downtown Halifax as swells grew steadily in strength and size.

I Samuel 12:24-25 [NIV]

But be sure to fear the LORD and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you.  Yet if you persist in doing evil, both you and your king will be swept away.

Proverbs 5:7-8 [ESV]

And now, O sons, listen to me, and do not depart from the words of my mouth. Keep your way far from her, and do not go near the door of her house.

What does God's Story say about getting dangerously close to sin?

In today's story, there are a few important things to notice.

  • Everyone was warned repeatedly.
  • Those who got too close were there because the temptation was "attractive".
  • Everyone who was dangerously close didn't think they could be swept away...instead they "laughed it off" when they got splashed by the waves.
  • Eventually people were hurt and lives were lost.

In today's first scripture passage we see Samuel offering the same repeated warning to the people of Israel. "Fear the Lord and serve Him faithfully...but if you continue to do evil, you will be swept away."

Yet, for some reason we (and the people of Israel) continue to get dangerously close to the evil we have been warned about. Why do we do this? Because sin is attractive and we think that we will never be sucked in and swept away...other people maybe, but certainly not us. And then, just as God told us, sin grabs a hold of us and we fall.

The passage in Proverbs, however, helps us to know how to avoid this...and the answer is to stay far away. The author Solomon is writing about the specific temptation of an adulterous woman, but the principle applies to any temptation that we may encounter...don't go anywhere near it!

Connecting today's story and God's Story to my story

  • There are many temptations that you could be facing...substance abuse, sexual impurity, cheating, stealing, lying, pornography, gossiping...whatever you are struggling with, be sure to humbly pay close attention to the warning that God is giving you.
  • Many of these temptations are situations that we could avoid simply by choosing not to put ourselves dangerously near sin. Avoiding these situations might mean not being at the party to begin with, not getting on line when no one else is around or not hanging out with a group of "friends" that continually gossip, lie or disrespect their parents. To avoid any sin, stay far away from the temptation!
  • If you have already fallen and been swept away, know that you are never too far from shore for Jesus to rescue you and heal your wounds. All you need to do is call out to Him and He will be faithful to save you.

Connecting today's story, God's Story and my story with my friend's story

  • Got a friend who is standing dangerously close to the waves of temptation and sin? Love them well by being courageous enough to share your concern for them. If they are Christ-followers, gently remind them of the truth from God's Word that they may need to hear. If they are not Christ-followers, respectfully ask them if you can share why you are concerned. Maybe God will use you to redirect their steps to a better path.
  • Got a friend who has already been swept away and is soon to go under? Pray for them! Reach out to them! It is never too late.

Man's love runs deep in search for ring

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - A New Zealand man has been dubbed the Lord of the Ring after he searched and found his wedding ring more than a year after it slipped off his finger and sank to the sea floor.

The ring was lost for 16 months in the harbor of the country's capital city, Wellington, before Aleki Taumoepeau found it shining on the sea floor, the DominionPost newspaper reported Thursday.

"The whole top surface of the ring was glowing," Taumoepeau, an ecologist, said.

Taumoepeau had been married for just three months when he lost the wedding ring while conducting an environmental sweep of the harbor.

He roughly marked the spot where the ring had flown from his finger, but was unable to find it despite returning to the area many times.

Taumoepeau's wife offered to buy another ring, but he refused, pledging to find the ring.

But, equipped with new global satellite based coordinates and offering up a quick prayer, he found the ring after an hour's search.

"I couldn't believe that I could see the ring so perfectly," Taumoepeau said.

He said those with him on the boat at the time the ring flew off his finger had likened it to a similar, slow motion shot from

The Lord of the Rings, much of which was filmed in Wellington by local director Peter Jackson.

Luke 15:8-10

"Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Does she not light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.' In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents."

What Is the Kingdom of God Like?

Like me, some might think that the man in today's story was a little extreme. I'm not sure I would waste the time during an entire year to search for a wedding ring. I probably would of just bought another one (eventually!).

Jesus tells us that the Kingdom of God is like this man searching for his lost wedding ring.

God pursues us with that same energy and is overjoyed when we come to Him. Often we picture God sitting on His throne not very interested in our affairs.

But Jesus continually paints us another picture. We must pause and reflect on this often in a world that is often very cynical and negative.

God is actually excited that we are in His family. The question is: Are we?

  • Pause and reflect on the fact that we are part of God's Kingdom. We are part of the same family as all the saints mentioned in the Bible. Someday we will be with Moses, Elijah, and Paul and not just read about them.
  • God rejoices over us. Rejoice is defined as "bringing happiness or joy" to someone. Many things bring us happiness and joy but does being in God's Kingdom do it? Start this week (and try and do it everyday this week) by praying to God for a taste of joy for being a child of God.
  • Are their friends and family that you have given up on or thought were lost causes?
  • As school approaches pray that God would renew your strength in praying for those people in your life who don't know Him. Pray that God would give you the persistence to love them this year and the joy in your heart if they come to God in faith.

I See The Train Coming... and Coming... and Coming...

Chinese bride trains eye on wedding dress record

BEIJING (Reuters Life!) – A Chinese bride is hoping to enter the record books after getting married in a wedding dress with a train more than 2 km (1.2 miles) long trailing behind her.

It took guests more than three hours to roll out the gown, complete with 9,999 silk red roses attached to it, in the northeastern province of Jilin, state news agency Xinhua said.

"Both the length of the dress and the number silk roses pinned on the wedding dress can make history," the report quoted groom Zhao Peng as saying.

Zhao, who has applied to Guinness World Records, said he was inspired after seeing a story on the previous record holder in Romania, where the dress measured just over 1.5 km.

"I do not want a cliche wedding parade or banquet," he said.

Bride Lin Rong "laughed and cried at the romantic gesture," Xinhua said.

The dress cost around 40,000 yuan ($5,856), which prompted initial opposition to the plan from his family.

"It is a waste of money in my opinion," said Zhao's mother. "Though I understand that he wants to show his love on the big day."

($1 = 6.830 Yuan)

Isaiah 6:1-3 (English Standard Version)

1In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3And one called to another and said:

"Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!"

4And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke.

What does today's God's Story teach us about glory?

"Isaiah's lofty view of God in 6:1-4 gives us a sense of God's greatness, mystery, and power.  Isaiah's example of recognizing his sinfulness before God encourages us to confess our sin.  His picture of forgiveness reminds us that we, too, are forgiven.  When we recognize how great our God is, how sinful we are, and the extent of God's forgiveness, we receive power to do his work.  How does your concept of the greatness of God measure up to Isaiah's?" (Life Application Study Bible Note, 6:1ff)

The bride's dress in Today's Story might have been a sight to behold, with the long train and all those flowers.  But nothing, absolutely nother, can compare to the Greatness of our God!  Isaiah said the train of His robe filled the temple!  And as we read in the note above, God's greatness reminds us of how much we need his forgiveness!

How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
  • Read the rest of Isaiah 6 each day this weekend.  Thank God for his greatness.
  • When you think about the Greatness of God, does it reveal part of your life you have yet to surrender to God?  Confess that sind to God and receive his forgiveness.
  • Thank God for His Spirit that gives us power to do His work.

How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture and our story to others?

  • Mention Today's Story to a friend and ask them what they think about a wedding dress with such a long train.
  • Look for examples in the world around you of people trying to be "great."  Look for ways to connect God's Story into that conversation.
  • Is there someone with whom you've been sharing your story and God's Story for a while?  Invite them to attend worship with you this weekend to experience the greatness of God with other believers.

Twitter site offers followers line to God

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Want to tweet God?

Tweet God An Israeli university student has opened a Twitter site, twitter.com/thekotel, where prayers can be sent for placement in the crevices of Jerusalem's Western Wall, a Jewish holy site that faithful believe provides a direct line to the Almighty.

"I take their prayers, print them out and drive to Jerusalem to put them in the Western Wall," said Alon Nir, a resident of Tel Aviv.

He said he hoped his initiative on the popular Internet social networking service, where users post brief messages known as tweets, would be "beneficial to people all over the world."

Nir promises to deliver the prayers -- each no longer than a tweet's maximum 140 characters -- on a regular basis.

Prayers, which are sent via a direct message link on Nir's Twitter site, cannot be viewed by the public.

At the Western Wall, where he placed some 1,000 rolled-up papers, Nir told Reuters: "People trusted me with their innermost feelings and secret thoughts ... and it's my duty to provide them with what I promised."

Several services deliver prayers sent by email, text message or fax to the wall. Israeli postal authorities say prayers also arrive from overseas by regular mail, some in envelopes addressed "Dear God."

Romans 8:26,27 (NIV)

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will.

The Holy Spirit is Better Than Twitter

In its basic form prayer is communication with God. Just like talking with friends and family, we can come to God through Christ. We can come either formally or informally. But the good news is that we can come.

Even when we don't know what to say, the Spirit of God helps us. We don't need a twitter account or a family priest.

God just asks us to come to Him and the Holy Spirit will express what is in our hearts and minds.

How comforting is that! We all have been in situations with others when we don't know what to say. We search for just the right words and often feel like we've said too much or not enough. That is ok with God. We have a Counselor who knows us intimately and goes to God for us.

So the moral of the story today is we need to go to God in prayer. We don't have to have it all together, but we do need to pray.

  • Let yourself relax and go to God in prayer today. Don't worry about saying the right things just picture Jesus sitting with you and have a conversation. Allow His presence to to fill the room and trust that He understands you today. Talk about all that is on your mind and end with giving thanks to Him. Let the Spirit of God communicate your mind and heart. That is good enough.
  • Praying for others today will be similar to the above description. Pray for friends, family and/ or situations and ask the Holy Spirit to make this clear to God. Trust that Holy Spirit knows the situation even better than you and allow Him to bring it to the Father.
  • During the day, have easy conversations with God concerning your prayer requests and allow the Holy Spirit to lead you to action.

Goodwill - Literally!

After making innumerable trips to the Goodwill in Santa Cruz, CA with seven sisters and two brothers saying, "we would find treasures there," Everette Rose has been showing her gratitude to the community by volunteering at the Goodwill since 2001.

Rose attended a nine-month course at Goodwill's training program and in 1994 received a certificate in Office Skills Training, one of the many training programs at Goodwill. Upon graduation, she was hired as a receptionist from 1995-99.

Just when she thought she might finally leave Goodwill behind, Phyllis Green, president of Goodwill auxiliary, honored Rose by asking her to be a part of the auxiliary volunteer group.

"I was very excited," Rose says, after hearing Green's request.

After seven years of being on the auxiliary among 50 members, Rose was nominated Volunteer of the Year in 2008. That just made her day, she said.

"She is one of the hardest working volunteers in our group," says Charlotte Smith, marketing specialist at Goodwill. "I never met anyone like her. I have known her for the seven years that I've worked, and she's a key person in our volunteer group."

Rose goes to the Goodwill every Monday morning to volunteer at 7:30 a.m. After six hours of work at the Goodwill helping to wash and separate dishes, and organizing labels, Rose says, "It makes me feel really good that I'm able to do something for somebody else."

Proverbs 3:27, 28 (NIV)

Do no withhold good from those who deserve it,
when it's in your power to help them.
If you can help your neighbor now, don't say,
"Come back tomorrow, and then I'll help you."

What Does God Say About Doing Good?

This article doesn't tell us what Everette Rose's motivations are but one thing we do know is that she acted. It made her feel good to volunteer and help others and she did it.

If you're like me, there are many times when I could volunteer or help someone and I'm waiting for the right time or the right feeling. We might think like this: "I'm waiting for the Spirit to move me."

Ironically, we don't use this same rationality when we're hungry and need to eat; when we're tired and need rest; or when we want to do something fun.

But God doesn't really specify that we wait for the right feeling to do something. He is good and He desires us to do good. We don't need the right feeling to show and act of kindness or help someone who needs it.

We just need to do it. Right now, if possible....Boy do I need these words of action!

  • Thank God for His goodness to you.
  • Thank Him for all those who have been kind to you and helped you when you needed it.
  • Very simply, if someone needs help today, help them. Write that letter or send that email that you have been putting off. Do the dishes for your folks. Help someone move some furniture. You get the picture.
  • Thank God for the opportunity to love Him by serving others (Now see how you feel!)

Greatest In The World...You?

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- A 1,224-pound triple vanilla cupcake with pink frosting has set a record as the world's largest.

The sugary behemoth was unveiled Saturday at the Woodward Dream Cruise classic cars event in Royal Oak, Mich. A Guinness World Records adjudicator was on hand to certify the cupcake's girth. It was more than eight times the size of the previous record holder.

The colossal cupcake took 12 hours to bake and included 800 eggs and 200 pounds each of sugar and flour. Slices of the cupcake were served in exchange for donations to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast cancer organization.

Ryan Abood, owner of New Hampshire-based Gourmetgiftbaskets.com who made the cupcake, told the Detroit Free Press that it clocked in at an estimated 2 million calories.

(Story provided by huffingtonpost.com 8/17/09)

Ephesians 2:10 [NLT]

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

What does God's Story say about being great?

This ginormous, record-breaking cupcake made its debut on the same day that Usain Bolt broke ran a world record 9.58 second 100 meter dash...also the same day that formerly unknown Y.E. Yang gained global recognition for beating the world's best golfer, Tiger Woods.

Our culture constantly pushes us to succeed. Sometimes the message is subtle and other times it comes across loud and clear...if you want to be something great, achievement is where it's at! This can happen by baking the biggest cupcake, running the fastest 100 meters, getting the best grades, earning a spot on the varsity team, getting into an elite college...singing, dancing, playing, drawing...just as long as you can be among the best, then you are worthy of recognition.

God's Word says something quite different. It says that you are already great in God's eyes. You are His masterpiece! He created you just the way you are and He couldn't love you any more or any less. You could break a thousand world records and it couldn't make Him love you any more! And if you are on the other end of that...seeming to fail at everything you try (according to the world's standards that is)...He doesn't love you any less. Why? Because you are His. How could He not love His masterpiece!?!

Connecting today's story, God's Story and my story

Recognize that achievement is not the problem...it is our attitude behind it. Here are some questions to ask yourself that might indicate a wrong attitude about achievement if your answer is yes:

  • Do I want to achieve so that I receive praise and recognition?
  • Do I want to achieve so that others will accept me?
  • Do I want to achieve so that God will think I am doing a good job...doing enough for Him?

Here are some questions that, if answered yes, might indicate a heart that lines up with God's Word:

  • Do I know that I am loved by God regardless of how I "perform"?
  • Do I know that I can not "earn" his grace, forgiveness or love? (Eph.2:8-9)
  • Do I realize that God has created specific things for me to do and that I should do them with excellence simply to bring Him glory and fulfill my purpose?

Connecting today's story, God's Story and my story with my friend's story

  • Perhaps you know a friend who works constantly to achieve. Ask them why they work so hard. Find out what drives them. Maybe they are trying to please their parents, impress their friends or make a reputation for themselves. Maybe they are really tired and ready to get off the never-ending treadmill of life's performance. What a great opportunity to let them know that they are already "the world's greatest" because they are loved by a God who made them His masterpiece!
  • If you are given the gifts by God to actually be among the best...this is not a bad thing...but use this as a chance to bring God glory rather than yourself. Whether it is in the locker room, a quote in the local paper or a T.V. interview, make sure to bring glory to the One who has given you every ability that you have.

Bolt Runs Like Lightening in Beating His Own Record!

BERLIN (Reuters) - Usain Bolt delivered one of the most astonishing performances ever seen in athletics when he scorched to world championship 100 meters gold in a mind-blowing 9.58 seconds on Sunday. The flying Jamaican took a massive 0.11 seconds off the previous record mark he ran to win the Olympic gold medal in Beijing one year ago to the day. That left defending champion Tyson Gay a distant second even though the American's time of 9.71 was the third-fastest ever. Asafa Powell of Jamaica was third in 9.84.

Bolt on the track"I'm not a person who thinks about world records, I think about championships," Bolt said after sending the crowd into hysteria. "That's what I went out to do and I ran a world record."

The exploits of Jesse Owens in the same Olympic Stadium 73 years ago have been a hot topic of conversation in Berlin this week and Sunday's show could have a similar shelf-life. The 100 meters record is usually nibbled at in one or two hundredths of a second slices but Bolt took a huge bite out of it and has now dropped it from 9.74 to 9.58 in a little over a year.

Bolt had given an indication of what was to come when he clocked 9.89 in his semi-final without seeming to hit top gear. That also came after he had false-started for the first time in his career. By the time of the final, conditions were perfect, with a warm evening and a legal tailwind of 0.9. Bolt unwound his long frame instantly from the blocks and was up and into his running alongside the fast-starting Gay to take control after 20 meters.

He roared through the line, watching the clock all the while, before setting off on a lap of honor, talking to the media and posing for photos with fans for almost an hour.

Gay had no complaints after a superb performance on the back of a persistent groin injury. "He ran a great race. I ran my best race but it wasn't enough," he said.

1 Corinthians 9:24, 25

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.
Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.

What Does God Say About Running the Race?

Like Usain Bolt, we should run to get the prize in our Christian walks. Often, we just go through the motions and wonder why we don't experience Christ to the fullest.

Today's Scripture is at the end of a chapter in which Paul is explaining to the church in Corinth that he strives to "become all things to all people" for the sake of the gospel.

His eye is on the prize of eternity and sharing that message with as many as he can so that they might share eternity with him. That is truly running the Christian race with an eternal perspective.

May we be like Paul and run the race with our eyes on the prize.

  • Read all of 1 Corinthians chapter 9 so you might see today's passage in context of how Paul lived among the church in Corinth?
  • Are you running for the prize in your Christian walk or just going through the motions?
  • If you are just going through the motions, ask the Holy Spirit to empower you to love Christ and His message more so that you might run a better race.
  • Paul talks about how he put up with many things in order that God would be glorified and the gospel advanced. If this is true for Paul than it will be no less true for us. Instead of reacting to others in irritation today, look for ways to endure for the sake of the gospel.
  • Pray for others around you with an "eternal perspective." Don't just pray for their material happiness but that their eyes would be opened to the things of God.

Calling It Quits!

Brooks & Dunn are done.

Best-selling country duo Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn posted a message on their Website Monday saying they agreed to "call it a day" after 20 years of making music together.

"This ride has been everything and more than we could ever have dreamed ... We owe it all to you, the fans," they said in the message. "If you hear rumors, don't believe them, it's just time."

Brooks & Dunn will release a greatest-hits album on Sept. 8 and tour one last time in 2010.

The duo's many hits include "Boot Scootin' Boogie," "My Maria," "Red Dirt Road" and "Cowgirls Don't Cry" with Reba McEntire.

The men's label, Arista Nashville, said the group has sold more than 30 million albums.

Brooks, 54, and Dunn, 56, were struggling solo artists when Arista's Tim DuBois urged them to join forces in 1990. Together they've scored 23 No. 1 hits.

They've recorded 10 studio albums, the latest 2007's "Cowboy Town."

"They've been to the mountaintop and they've accomplished everything that two human beings joined together musically can do in a career," said Brian Philips, president of Country Music Television. "They've had every kind of hit. Literally, they've explored every musical texture and tempo and style and flavor."

CMT is scheduled to tape Brooks & Dunn performing and discussing their music Wednesday for an episode of the show "Invitation Only" to air in October.

Philips called the announcement of the split a complete surprise. He said he has no idea what they might do in the future, but he's certain it will involve music.

"The guys that I know, I can't imagine either of those two individuals walking away from music. That's unthinkable," Philip said.

The pair steeped itself in the mythical West (the duo's emblem is a sun-bleached steer's skull) and rode the charts with a driving honky-tonk sound. Brooks & Dunn took a turn with 2003's "Red Dirt Road" and often pay homage to their classic rock influences, including playing shows with the Rolling Stones and ZZ Top.

Brooks & Dunn won the Country Music Association's vocal duo of the year award every year between 1992 and 2006, except for 2000.

The CMA named the duo entertainer of the year in 1996.

Other country groups have called it quits only to reunite. The mother-daughter duo The

Judds split in 1991 but regrouped to tour and record years later.

Acts 15:36-41 (English Standard Version)

Paul and Barnabas Separate

36And after some days Paul said to Barnabas, "Let us return and visit the brothers in every city where we proclaimed the word of the Lord, and see how they are." 37Now Barnabas wanted to take with them John called Mark. 38But Paul thought best not to take with them one who had withdrawn from them in Pamphylia and had not gone with them to the work. 39And there arose a sharp disagreement, so that they separated from each other. Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed away to Cyprus, 40but Paul chose Silas and departed, having been commended by the brothers to the grace of the Lord. 41And he went through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.

What does God's Story scripture tell us about parting ways?

Most all of us have had friends with whom we've parted ways.  Some might have been due to a move.  Some might have been over a disagreement.  Some might have been simply because we started a new school year without any classes together.  Some might have simply grown apart because our interests changed.  It seems to be a reality of this life.

In God's Story we see Paul and Barnabas part ways over a pretty serious disagreement.  But here's the cool part ... God multiplied the minsitry that would take place by divding the team of Paul and Barnabas.  After the division, there were two teams heading out to share Jesus with others.  God worked in the midst of their division.

How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
  • Read Acts 16 to see the ministry that God had in store for Paul and his new partner Silas.
  • Ask God if there might be another follower of Jesus in your life with whom you could partner this year at school.
How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture and our story to others?
  • Have you parted ways with a friend in the past?  Did you part on good terms?  If you didn't, get in touch with them and make amends if you can.
  • Have you seen God work in new friendships when old ones faded?  Talk with those new friends about how God has worked in your friendship.
  • Begin praying for the new friendships that God might have in store for you when you head back to school.  Pray that God will give you a partner with whom you can, together, share God's Story with friends who need to hear it.

One False Start Means Disqualification

BERLIN (Reuters) - From next year any athlete committing a false start will be immediately disqualified under a rule change approved by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) on Wednesday.

Under the current system one false start is allowed "against the field" and anyone subsequently false-starting is then disqualified.

The rule, which will come into force from January 1 2010, does not apply to combined events such as the decathlon and heptathlon, where one false start per race will be allowed with any subsequent false start attracting disqualification.

The new system, which has worked successfully in swimming since its introduction 10 years ago and is also used in American collegiate athletics, had been opposed by many leading athletes but was approved by a vote of 97 to 55 at the IAAF Congress which is taking place in Berlin ahead of the world championships beginning on Saturday.

IAAF President Lamine Diack said: "The current rule gives sprinters the chance to play the system, to deliberately false start but not be punished for it." Until 2003 the same athlete had to false-start twice to be disqualified.

Romans 6:14 (NIV)

For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.

Ephesians 3:7 (NIV)

I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God's grace given me through the working of his power.

Luke 15:20 (NIV)

"But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

Our God is a God of Grace

How many of us have had "false starts" in life? My hand will be the first to go up. I have constantly made bad choices or no choices that I wish I could take back.

If our lives were monitored by the system in our story above, we all would be disqualified from life. But the good news of the gospel is that God is a God of grace.

Grace is defined as the free and unmerited favor of God. Basically God loves us unconditionally without us having to earn it.

The problem is that many of us live with the concept that God is just waiting for us to make a mistake so He can disqualify us.

Like the apostle Paul, we all have been called by God's grace to do good works for Him. Not the other way around. There is nothing we can do or give to God to earn His favor.

As a matter of fact, Jesus tells us that even when we feel distant from God, He comes running to us with His arms open wide. He even throws us a party! That's how great God's love and grace are. Wow!

I think keeping this image of God in our minds could do wonders for us when we don't feel qualified or able to handle the life that God has given us.

  • Are there areas in your life today that you are feeling "disqualified" from?
  • On the other hand, do you feel totally in control of your life and confident because of your own talents?
  • Go to prayer and acknowledge God's grace. You can even pray using the first two scriptures above and then end with the image of Christ embracing you in unconditional love. (Don't take these exercises too lightly. It is often faulty images of God that effect us negatively. Of course, the opposite is true as well.)
  • Are there some people around you that feel like they have failed in some aspect of their lives? If so, share with them how God's unconditional love has effected you.
  • Look for ways to be like Christ in the story above. Undoubtedly, there are many people who have wronged you or disappointed you. Ask God to give you the grace to love them and extend grace to them as well.

The Perseids Are Coming!

Strong Meteor Shower Predicted Tonight

The annual Perseid meteor shower is expected to put on a good show this week for those willing to get up in the wee hours of the morning and wait patiently for the shooting stars.

The Perseids are always reliable, and sometimes rather spectacular. The only things that puts a damper on the August show are bad weather or bright moonlight. Unfortunately this week, as the Perseids reach their peak Tuesday and Wednesday nights, the moon will be high in the sky, outshining the fainter meteors.

Still, skywatchers around the globe will have a good chance of spotting the brighter meteors. The Perseids are bits of debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle, which has laid down several streams of debris, each in a slightly different location, over the centuries as it orbits the sun. Every August, Earth passes through these debris streams, which spread out over time.
"They are typically fast, bright and occasionally leave persistent trains," says Joe Rao, SPACE.com's Skywatching Columnist. "And every once in a while, a Perseid fireball will blaze forth, bright enough to be quite spectacular and more than capable to attract attention even in bright moonlight."

Low numbers of Perseids, including some dazzling fireballs have already been reported as Earth began entering the stream in late July. Seasoned observers have counted up to 25 per hour already, or nearly one every two minutes.

Astronomers expect up to 200 meteors per hour in short bursts of up to 15 minutes or so. But many of the fainter meteors will simply not be visible due to moonlight, and rates will go down even more for those in urban areas. More likely a typical observer under reasonably dark skies might hope to see a meteor every couple minutes when the bursts come, and fewer during lulls.

Meteor forecasting is still in its infancy, however, so the best bet for anyone truly hungry to spot shooting stars is to get in as much observing time as possible from around 11 p.m. Tuesday night until dawn Wednesday, and if you miss that show, try the same time frame Wednesday evening into Thursday morning.
Avid meteor watchers might want to try scanning the northeastern horizon from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. local time (your local time, wherever you are) Tuesday and Wednesday for Perseids that graze the horizon.

Cooke points out that these earthgrazers, as they are called, are rare but remarkable.
"Earthgrazers are meteors that approach from the horizon and skim the atmosphere overhead like a stone skipping across the surface of a pond," Cooke explained. "They are long, slow and colorful – among the most beautiful.”

Psalm 8:3-4
3 When I consider your heavens,
       the work of your fingers,
       the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
4 what is man that you are mindful of him,
the son of man that you care for him?

Psalm 147:3-5
 3 He heals the brokenhearted
       and binds up their wounds.
4 He determines the number of the stars
and calls them each by name.
 5 Great is our Lord and mighty in power;
       his understanding has no limit.

What does today's story & God's Story Scripture teach us about God's Creative Love?

What an incredible, creative, mighty God we have.  Just think, the one who created the stars and makes the meteor shower possible, loves you deeply.  In a world where it is easy to feel lost, unknown, and insignificant, remember that the God of the Universe not only knows the stars in heaven by name but also knows not only your name but your every thought.  The bible tells us God knows the very number of hairs on your head.

How can we connect today's story & God's Story to our lives?

  • Its not too late to see the meteor shower.  Try spending a few minutes tonight around 11:00 enjoying the show and being reminded of how big God is and how much he loves you.
  • Are there some concerns or fears you are facing that you haven’t been able to trust God with yet?  Remember He is the one who put each star in its place in the sky, if He can handle that, surely He can handle the issues in your life.  Take a few minutes to turn those over to Him and then wait to see how He works.

How can we connect today's story, God's Story, and our story to our friends?

  • Invite a couple friends to sit outside with you tonight and watch the meteor shower.  Talk about the verses in Psalm or how cool God’s creation is.
  • Tell a friend who doesn’t know Jesus yet about a time when God felt very close to you and how exciting it is to know that he really “gets” you.

Wanna Trade Your Clunker?

President Obama signed into law Friday morning legislation bolstering the popular cash-for-clunkers program by giving it an extra $2 billion in hopes of extending a wave of trade-in deals that buoyed car sales and boosted demand for fuel-efficient vehicles in July. The Senate passed the bill Thursday by a vote of 60 to 37.

Obama welcomed the extension of the "cash for clunkers" auto sales incentive, saying it would aid economic recovery and help the troubled auto industry. The law extends the program until Labor Day, the first Monday in September, and prevents the 2-week-old incentives from running out.

The House already had approved putting $2 billion more into the program, which gives consumers up to $4,500 in federal subsidies for trading in cars that get less than 18 mpg and buying new cars with better fuel economy.

"The reality is this is a program that has been working," Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., said. "Consumers believe it's working. Small-business people believe it's working. People who make steel and aluminum, and advertisers … and everyone who's involved in the larger economic impact of the auto industry believe it is working."

The legislation had its share of Senate critics, most of them Republicans.

"What we're doing is creating debt," Sen. Judd Gregg, R-N.H., said. "The bill to pay for those cars is going to come due on our children and grandchildren."

Ephesians 4:22-23 [The Message]

Everything—and I do mean everything—connected with that old way of life has to go. It's rotten through and through. Get rid of it! And then take on an entirely new way of life—a God-fashioned life, a life renewed from the inside and working itself into your conduct as God accurately reproduces his character in you.

II Corinthians 5:17 [NIV]

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

What does God's Story teach us about trading in our old life for a new one?

I meet young people every day who are living lives that are "clunkers". They are broken down, dented up and running out of gas fast! They keep trying to get one more mile out of a life that just isn't working. Some of them find themselves dropping out of school, facing teen pregnancy, in the midst of broken relationships and in some cases, homeless, simply because no one will take on the burden of their broken lives.

It is at that point that many of them can see that life just isn't working when they are behind the wheel. They see that they have a need that can only be met by God Himself. It is then that the Good News becomes just that...good news...they get to "trade in" their old broken lives for something brand new!

What does this eternal trade-in mean for my life?

  • If you have already made the decision to exchange your old life for something new...praise God! As today's story explains, many people are concerned about who is going to have to pay for this new governmental program. We don't have that same worry.  The bill has been paid. Jesus has covered the greatest cost ever known to man. Praise be to His name!
  • Part of the "cash for clunkers" deal is that the older, less efficient engines are destroyed. The dealer is responsible for disabling the engine so that it can never run again. In Ephesians we are told that everything connected to the old way of life has to go! This takes time, but now that you have been made new, make sure that you are daily allowing the Holy Spirit to produce that new Godly Character in you...leaving no room for the old you. Consider the old you permanently disabled!

What does this eternal trade-in mean for my friends?

  • When this program first came out, the news spread like wildfire. Everyone wanted to know the details of it and everyone wanted to get in on it. If you were one of the first who received $4,500 for an old piece of junk, you would be sure to tell your friends about this as soon as possible. The same is true for the Message of Jesus Christ...but it is way better! Your friends desperately need to hear about this news.
  • Remember that it's not your job to "save them"...only Jesus can do that. Just tell them what you know! Tell them all about your new life. Describe all of the cool features (peace, joy, purpose, love, forgiveness, guidance, friendship, sunroof, power locks...umm, you get the idea). When they compare their clunker to what God has given you, they will surely want to know more.

Be Careful What You Post Online, Career Counselors Warn

NEW YORK (Reuters) - People concerned about their careers should be extra careful about what they post on the Internet during a recession, career counselors say.

Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, blogs and other venues present numerous opportunities to sabotage your hunt for a job or promotion at a time when employers can afford to be picky.

"With social media, you can be vapid, boring and annoying with alarming frequency," Patricia Vaccarino, owner of a Seattle public relations firm, warned clients in a newsletter.

Vaccarino said many of her Facebook friends have posted "in great detail about their colonoscopies, dead teeth pulled, dead dogs, flatulence, adult acne, marital breakups, battles with mental illnesses and drinking problems."

If this information can make friends cringe, she added, imagine the impression it would make on a potential employer.

Kurt Weyerhauser, an executive recruiter at Kensington Stone in Los Angeles, said one human resources department "found a picture online of a candidate smoking what appeared to be pot, and in another case a company found a few severely off-color jokes that a candidate had posted dealing with race and gender."

He said the blunders can be roadblocks to being hired, regardless of the candidate's ability to perform the basic functions of the job.

Hiring people with that kind of public record online may even put a company in legal jeopardy.

"If there is ever a problem with drug use or the harassment of coworkers the company could be liable," he told Reuters.

In some U.S. states, hiring or promoting people who have exhibited drug use or racist or sexist attitudes "could constitute negligent hiring or negligent retention," according to Weyerhauser.

Even innocuous postings can cause problems.

He cited the example of the single mother raising four children who posts about her day-to-day life, which might convince an employer that she is too tired and overburdened to be considered for a promotion that might require more time and energy.

Weyerhauser had one final tip. He urges job hunters to think about their email address.

"Nothing gives one more cause for pause than receiving a resume from an email address like 'BigGoofyRuthie@xxxxxx.com'," he said.

Philippians 1:27 (NIV)

Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in one spirit, contending as one man for the faith of the gospel.

How Should We Conduct Ourselves?

As today's story shows, our world is instantly connected. When we did something stupid in the past, it either took a long time for people to find out or they never did.

It is not like that now. With texting, twittering, and multimedia messages our lives can be an open book at the touch of a button.

While this can be a little discouraging at times, the apostle Paul tells us that "we should conduct ourselves in a worthy manner" regardless if someone is watching or not.

Paul didn't have the convenience of the internet or cell phones but it doesn't matter. Paul made a plea to the church in Phillipi to live as God was watching so he could be assured they were living the gospel whether he was there or not.

We should do the same.

  • If you have been careless with your words and actions online, texting, etc... ask God to forgive you and with His help move on to a more godly lifestyle.
  • Live as though you have an "Audience of One". The One being God of course. Instead of feeling like He is a big brother looking down on your every move, think of Him more of a loving Father who delights in your acknowledging His presence in your daily activiites.
  • If your friends challenge your not participating in "questionable" online activities use this as an opportunity to share why you are doing it. Without being condemning, simply share that you are concerned with what God thinks about how you interact online. (Of course, as the article suggests it is a good idea for the future as well!)

What's In A Name?

Arkansas Mother Sells Naming Rights of Unborn Son on eBay

What's in a name? For an expectant mom who's down on her luck, hopefully $25,000 or more.

An Arkansas woman is offering the opportunity to name her seventh child to the highest bidder, starting at $150. The unemployed mother of six has posted an auction on eBay in hopes that she will receive enough money to buy a "trustworthy" car and to relieve her sister's burden of supporting her cash-strapped family.

Lavonne Drummond, 36, of Smackover, Ark., a "super small town" in the southern part of the state, says the idea to hawk the first name of her second son "just came to me" while she was thinking of ways out of her economic nightmare.

"It sounds really crazy but I thought maybe there's someone out there who could help me out with a good name," Drummond told FOXNews.com. "I'm running out of names."

Drummond — whose six children are 19, 16, 14, 3, 2 and 1 — said the proposal hasn't exactly struck friends and relatives as a savvy financial move. And her husband, Richard, a Navy sailor stationed in Virginia, doesn't even know about it yet.

"I didn't really ask their opinion, but last night I did get some feedback and it was not good," she said. "It's put a little rift in the family right now. They don't think it's a good idea. They think it makes us vulnerable."

Drummond's son is due on Sept. 16. With four days remaining in the eBay auction, no bids had been received as of Wednesday. But she's confident bids will start coming in soon. Whatever name the top bidder chooses, Drummond said she'll honor the request and even allow that individual to visit with the child.

"I would follow through with the name, but I'm putting my trust out there," she said. "They're helping me out here in two situations — helping a family in need and coming up with a name for my beautiful baby boy."

John 1:35-42 (ESV)

35The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, 36and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God!" 37The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 38Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them,  "What are you seeking?" And they said to him, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?" 39He said to them, "Come and you will see." So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour. 40 One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah" (which means Christ). 42He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "So you are Simon the son of John? You shall be called Cephas" (which means Peter).
What does God's Story teach us about giving a name?

What's in a name?  It's apparent that God would say "a lot!"  Throughout God's Story we find God changing the name of people.  Today we read about Simon becoming Peter.  Why?  Here's what the Life Application Study Bible has to say about that ...

Jesus saw not only who Simon was, but who he would become.  That is why he gave him a new name - Cephas in Aramaic, Peter in Greek (the name means "a rock").  Peter is not presented as rock-solid throughout the Gospels, but he became a solid rock in the days of the early church, as we learn in the book of Acts.  By giving Simon a new name, Jesus introduced a change in character.

If that same thing were to happen to you, what name would God choose for you?  What does He see you becoming?  What do you see yourself becoming in your relationship with God?

How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?

  • Ask your parents why they chose the name you have?  Ask them what other names they considered?
  • Have you ever wondered what your name means? Do some research this weekend to find out.
  • Look through God's Story this weekend and find people who either had their name changed or God gave the parents the name before the child was born.
  • Thank God for seeing you for who you are becoming more than who you are today.

How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture and our story to others?
  • When you talk with your friends be intentional about using their names in the conversation.
  • Ask a friend how important a name can be to someone?
  • Ask a friend with whom you have been sharing God's Story what name they think God would choose for them today. Ask them what name they think God would choose for who they are becoming.
  • Share some stories from God's Story with them about how God chose and changed names.

Major League Baseball Player Storms Clubhouse in Anger!

Don't get Prince Fielder angry. You wouldn't like him when he's angry.

The Brewers slugger doesn't look all that mad in the photo but emotions inside Fielder (right) are about ready to boil into a rage during the final moments of the Dodgers 17-4 victory Tuesday night.

So incensed was Fielder at being hit with a pitch by right-hander Guillermo Mota(notes) in the ninth inning, he tried to storm the home team's clubhouse after the game, reporters and other witnesses said.

Hulk smash? Almost.

A security presence delayed Fielder — who was screaming mad with obscenities — from opening the door and confronting Mota or the other Dodgers. Fielder's teammates Casey McGehee(notes) and Bill Hall(notes) physically restrained him from taking his anger further.

The Dodgers had no idea what was happening 25 feet away

Ephesians 4:26-27 (NIV)

In your anger do not sin": Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.

Colossians 3:8 (NIV)

But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.

James 1:19-20

My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.

What Does God Say About Anger?

I think we can all relate to Prince Fielder in the sense that at some point during our lives a minor (or major) irritation from someone or some thing has set us off to rage in anger. Even if we don't demonstrate our anger as Mr. Fielder did we often stew inside and anger can take control. It dominates all of our thinking until we unleash it.

If many of you have just received the privelege of getting your drivers license you will quickly become familiar with the term "road rage." Someone will cut you off or not extend a courtesy and you will become angry. Sometimes very angry!

I am half Italian and half Irish. Both traditions are known to be a little hot-headed so you can imagine what that combination can be like. I'm pretty laid back but when I let my anger get a hold of me the results can be ugly for myself and for others.

God is very clear and direct in this matter. We must be aware of how easy it is to get angry and ask Him to help us overcome the destructiveness of it. Anger could be the very thing that is preventing many of us from living a godly life.

  • How easy is it for you to get angry? How have you displayed your anger?
  • Has that anger turned into bitterness? If so, give it to Christ and ask the Holy Spirit to replace it with a godly virtue like patience or love.
  • Memorize one or several of the above Scriptures. They are very short and are great to have available when faced with a situation where it is easy to become angry.
  • If you have wronged someone in your anger ask their forgiveness. It is very often our own weakness that God can use for good.
  • If someone else has become angry at you look at it as an opportunity to love them in Christ and possibly open up the channels of communication. There are many times in my life where a new friendship or at least a healthy respect has developed from an ugly situation.

U.S. Reporters Freed from North Korea

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Two American journalists freed by North Korea after months of detention returned home to a tearful family reunion on Wednesday accompanied by former President Bill Clinton, who secured their release in a meeting with the reclusive state's leader Kim Jong-il.

Laura Ling, 32, and Euna Lee, 36, reporters for an American cable television venture co-founded by Clinton's former vice president, Al Gore, arrived with Clinton at Burbank airport near Los Angeles aboard a private jet from North Korea.

The two Current TV journalists were arrested on March 17 for illegally crossing into the North from China and had been reporting on the trafficking of women. They were both sentenced to 12 years hard labor in June.

Ling raised her arms in the air as the two women descended from the plane for a tearful reunion with their families inside the airport hangar.

Ling said she and Lee both feared they could be taken at any moment to a hard labor camp when on Tuesday they were led instead to a location where Clinton was waiting for them.

"We knew the nightmare of our lives was finally coming to an end," she told reporters.Ling thanked all those, known and unknown, who had campaigned for their release. "We could feel your love all the way in North Korea. It is what kept us going in the darkest hours."

John 8:31-33

To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?"

What Does God Say About Being Free?

Freedom is talked about a great deal in the Bible. Joseph was set free by his captors, Jonah was set free from the belly of the whale, Israel was set free by God in Egypt, and so on. But here Christ is talking about us being personally made free.

Free from our bad thoughts and attitudes. Free from our thinking that we have it all figured out and have it all together. Free from our personal obssessions and guilt and shame.

How do we get such freedom?

The debate will go on and on to whether we must first believe first and then act or whether we take actions first and then we believe. I am not here to solve that mystery.

What is clear in this passage was the way in which Jesus dealt with the Jews around Him. The Jews were already religious people yet he challenged them to still be freed from their false assumptions about life.

They assumed that because they were identified with the "religious" nation of Israel that they were already free. But Christ understands that it is only through relationship with Him and His teachings that we can be truly free.

  • What things in your life are you enslaved to? Friends, internet, texting, sports, church, etc...
  • Pray that God would show you the truth about those things in your life that might take your freedom in Christ away. (We must be careful not to be make it all about "what we do" but what we do often shows us what we truly believe).
  • Pray that God would show you those around you who are enslaved by their thoughts, activities, friends, etc... It is usually pretty evident.
  • Ask God to provide opportunities to love them and share the freedom you have experienced by walking with Christ.

The Fasten Your Seatbelt Sign Is On!

Turbulence slams Continental jet, at least 26 hurt

Continental Plane

MIAMI – A Continental Airlines jet carrying 179 people from Brazil to Texas hit severe turbulence over the Atlantic early Monday, injuring at least 26 — including four seriously — and forcing an emergency landing in Miami, officials said.

One passenger said he felt Continental Flight 128 drop without warning while flight attendants were in the aisles, throwing some of them against the roof.

Houston-based Continental said there were 168 people and 11 crew on the Boeing 767. The airline released a statement that said the fasten seat belt sign was illuminated at the time and that about 28 passengers were treated in Miami.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokesman Elkin Sierra said four people were seriously injured aboard the Boeing 767 and another 22 were in stable condition with bumps and bruises. A total of 13 people were taken to hospitals.

The plane reported hitting severe turbulence at 4:30 a.m. and landed safely at 5:30 a.m, at Miami International Airport Bergen said.

Flight attendants were serving items in the aisles when the turbulence hit. He said some flight attendants were thrown against the roof of the cabin and may have been among those injured.

Matthew 5:45 [NIV]

He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

John 14:25-27 [NIV]

"All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

Isaiah 61:1 [NIV]

The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners.

What does God's Story teach us about the "turbulence" of life?

In today's story we read about unsuspecting passengers who thought they were along for a nice easy ride and soon found themselves in some pretty bad turbulence.

We too would rather have a nice easy journey through life...one with little complications or messy situations to deal with. We all know, however, that this is not going to be the case. Life can be tough. We are living in a fallen world; one that is full of sin and the consequences of it.

Thankfully God not only warned us, He has fully equipped us to deal with whatever life may bring. He also has called us to reach out to those who find themselves slammed against the ceiling but haven't yet been equipped by God to deal with the turbulence of life.

Connecting life's turbulence and God's Story with my story...

  • Sometimes there is a false teaching out there that once you become a Christian; God makes life easy for us. This is just not true. The Word even tells us straight up that it rains on the righteous and the unrighteous. Hard times will come to us whether we know Christ or not. The difference Christ makes is that He is WITH US to guide us through all of the bumpy rides of life.
  • We have been promised the Holy Spirit to both counsel us in tough situations and provide the peace that we need to weather the storms. If you are a Christ-follower, the Holy Spirit lives in you!
  • If you find yourself currently encountering some turbulence, be sure to seek help from God rather than relying on your own wisdom or strength.

Connecting today's story, God's Story and my story with my friend's story...

  • If you want to have an impact on the world...just look around you. There are needs everywhere you turn. Addictions, abuse, neglect, divorce, anger, cutting, teen pregnancy, gangs, violence...these are just a few of the tools that the enemy uses to bring "turbulence" into people's lives. Your friends are walking some hard roads and they desperately need God...but they will first experience Him through you.
  • You, like Isaiah, have the Spirit of the Lord on you. You have been anointed to share the Good News, bind up the brokenhearted, proclaim freedom to those who are captive to all sorts of "prisons" today and release them from the dark by bringing them into the light. You are anointed! God can use YOU!
  • If you are looking for a place to begin...start by just listening to your friends. Ask God to help you understand their pain and direct your words as you reach out to them in love through the power of the Holy Spirit.

No Kissing At Rock Concert!

BERLIN (Reuters) - Fans attending one of the world's biggest heavy metal festivals in Germany were asked on Thursday to avoid "hugging, kissing on the cheek, and shaking hands" lest they spread the H1N1 influenza. On its website, the health ministry of Germany's northern Schleswig-Holstein region optimistically advised revelers to restrain from any such sociable behavior so as to minimize the infection risk at the Wacken Open Air festival, which runs until August 1.

It also recommended fans did not share bottles of beer.

"We know that kissing and what have you can't be ruled out," said ministry spokesman Oliver Breuer. "They're just tips."

Stalwart rockers Motorhead, Anthrax and Napalm Death are among the bands due to perform at the three-day festival, which organizers expect to attract about 75,000 fans.

More than 430 people worldwide have died from the flu and more than 94,000 people have been, or are, infected.

Matthew 22:37-40

Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.

Is Our Faith Contagious?

In today's world we are consumed by being healthy. As we see in this aritcle the "swine flu" is the health concern of the day.

New storys are constantly reporting its status and how we might avoid it.But what about our faith? Do we avoid sharing our faith like we do catching the swine flu? I have been convicted recently how much more interested I am in my comfort than in loving God and loving others.

I've been reading a book lately that states our goal as people who follow Christ should be no less than becoming people who are madly in love with God. I've asked some hard questions of myself and realized I have been more concerned with my own comfort than loving God.

Can you relate? It is very easy in our culture to enjoy its blessings and ignore the Giver of those blessings. God pursues us continuously but we also must pursue him in turn. Any relationship that we don't show attentiveness to will eventually deterioate.

My prayer is that as Christians, we take small increments to pursue God as He has pursued us and that the result of that would be a faith that is "contagious" to those around us.

  • Begin each day with the prayer that God would help us make Him our greatest love and desire.
  • Ask questions of yourself like, "is this best way to love my neighbor?" and "is God pleased with my thoughts, desires, and actions?" God's response will most likely be different for each of us so don't judge others according to what God has shown you.
  • Try and live this week like each person you come in contact with is Christ. Notice how differently or similiarly you respond to others (and how they respond to you) with this attitude.
