Boy foils coyote attack on baby nephew
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - Wildlife officials are investigating what could be the first coyote attack on a human in New Jersey following a backyard attack on a toddler that was foiled by an 11-year-old.
Playing in the back yard of his Middletown Township home with his 22-month-old nephew, 11-year-old Ryan Palludan first thought the animal that bolted into the yard just before dark was a deer.
But when it grabbed little Liam Sadler in its jaws, Palludan instinctively sprang into action, yelling and kicking at the attacker which was later determined to be a coyote.
“It ran real fast, and in 10 seconds it was on Liam’s back, biting the back of his head and his neck,” Palludan said. “My dad and I chased it into the woods, and my sister got Liam inside.
The toddler’s grandfather, Philip Palludan, who says he is familiar with coyotes having seen them out West, said the animal that attacked the toddler was about the size of a German shepherd.

Keep your guard
Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)
6Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
God's living Holy Spirit dwells in the lives of all followers of Christ. The apostle Paul is teaching us that His Spirit will guard our heart and mind by giving us God's peace. That's an incredible security system! Are you using it?
The boy who protected his little nephew had first thought that a deer was running through the yard and was then surprised to realize that they were being attacked by a coyote!
Satan often cleverly disguises his attacks on us and we are caught off guard. Sometimes it's the difficult circumstances of life that catch us off guard and we find ourselves consumed in the jaws of worry.
That's why it's so important to trust God no matter what. He never changes. His love is constant. He has a perfect plan and purpose for us.
Paul's advice for us is to turn our worries into prayers. Whenever we start to worry, we should stop and pray. The result is God's peace which is different form the world's peace. Peace is not found in positive thinking or focusing on our "happy place", but it is discovered in trusting God because we know that He is in complete control. Let God's peace guard your heart against being anxious about life.
- Memorize today's scripture as a reminder of how to let God guard your heart and mind every day.
- Keep a written list of what you worry about. Turn this list into a daily prayer list. At the end of the month, evaluate what God has taught you about His peace guarding your heart and mind.
- Pray right now. Thank God for the power of His Spirit living in you. Confess any way in which you have been going through the motions of being a Christian and finding yourself living in anything but God's peace. Ask Jesus to give you the faith and discipline you need to consistently turn your worries into trusting prayers. Thank Jesus for His peace which will guard your heart and mind. It is beyond human understanding!
- Share what you've read and learned today with a friend who needs some encouragement in dealing with worry.
- When someone in your "storysphere" talks about something they are worried about, let them know that you will pray for them. (Then make sure you do!) Remember that part of God's Story is that He often uses change or conflict to help people see their need for Jesus.

Walker plunged 80ft to her death off cliff after chasing a bird feather
A rambler plunged 80ft to her death after she fell over a cliff edge while chasing a feather, coastguards said today.
The unnamed woman, who was in her 40s, ignored safety warnings and climbed over metal railings lining the cliff top to get to the feather before losing her footing and plummeting to the beach below.

Be Careful!
11 I guide you in the way of wisdom
and lead you along straight paths.
12 When you walk, your steps will not be hampered;
when you run, you will not stumble.
13 Hold on to instruction, do not let it go;
guard it well, for it is your life.
What does God's Story scripture teach us about living through wisdom?
Proverbs is a book that is easy to enjoy, because it is straight forward, and there seems always to be truth we can apply to our lives. Today's portion is no different. The Expositor's Bible Commentary says this about Proverbs 4:11-13, "The figure of the road is now used to make a comparison. Living according to wisdom is like walking or running on a safe road, a course that will be free of obstacles, so that progress will be certain."
I disagree with the commentator just a little bit. This proverb doesn't say the hindrances won't be there, but with our guide "wisdom" we can travel safely over anything in our way.
How can we connect God's Story scripture to our lives?
If it hasn't started already, people are going to give you lots of instruction in your life. They are going to give aphorisms that they hope will help to enrich your life. Most of what you are going to hear will be good, because like this proverb says, instruction will guard you. Most people in your life want the best for you. Here are some ways to make sure the advice they provide really is Godly wisdom.
- First of all, so that you learn to make this whole process a gut reaction, memorize these three verses. That way it is at the forefront of your mind.
- Anytime you are given advice on how to live that you're not sure about, compare it with scripture. Ask an older follower of Jesus that you trust to search with you.
- Ask God to give you a sense about the wisdom you have been given.
How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture, and our story to others?
Lets acknowledge up front that today's story was a sad one. Often in our lives, if we would just follow the signs, better yet the wisdom, we could avoid a lot of hurt. This is such a shocking story though, that it will be easy to bring it up to a friend. Run with these thoughts and make them your own...
- Share today's story with a friend, and just see their reaction. Then ask what they think about the walker ignoring the signs posted all around.
- See if your friend has ever received advice. Then talk about advice you've received. Ask if together you can see what scripture says about the wisdom you both have been offered.
- After you've spent some time looking at the instructions you have both been given, show your friend today's scripture from Proverbs. Then share with them why it is important to you to compare instruction to what the Bible says.

Heading to church for money advice

Jennifer Pedley had very little interest when her husband, Ken, suggested three years ago that they enroll in the Financial Peace University program their church in Brighton, Michigan, was offering. The couple, however, signed up to learn how to reduce their debt and get on a budget. Partway through the course, a light came on for her, Pedley said.
"I started to see the changes it was making not only in our money but in our relationship," she recalled.
"It was unbelievable, but 80 percent of personal finance is personal. There is so much related to communicating about money and communicating about life."
Kevin Stacia teaches stewardship at Ebenezer and said that with everyone from the wealthy to the disadvantaged being affected by the economy, it makes sense for churches to offer such programs.
"We always want members of the church and our community to be grounded in how God wants us to manage the things he has entrusted us with," Stacia said. "We want to give people an avenue to get knowledge and understanding."
Despite her initial resistance, Pedley said, she views it as a learning and growing experience.
"I never realized how practical the Bible is about money," she said. "It just makes so much sense."

You got questions?
We've got answers!
II Timothy 3:16-17 [NIV]
All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Joshua 1:7-8
Be careful to obey all of the law my servant Moses gave to you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Do not let the Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.
What does God's Story scripture teach us about how His Word applies to our lives?
Today's story is yet another example of a circumstance of life that drives people to seek truth. It happens when a national crisis occurs like we experienced on 9/11. It happens when a marriage falls apart. It happens in many different situations because people instinctively know where to find truth!
They naturally turn to The Church...which, by the way, is you and me. WE are the church and we have the answers they are looking for because we have God's Word. It is the source of all truth and knowledge.
Sometimes the Bible is mistaken for an out-of-date book that only has restrictions for our lives. The fact is that the Bible has relevant truth that speaks to nearly every situation in life and, when it is followed, will set people free!
There are answers to questions about money (which many people are interested in hearing these days)...but that's not all. There are answers to questions about life, relationships, death, work, health, sex, parenting, stress, drinking, friendship...and the list goes on and on!
The world has questions. The Word has answers.
How can we connect today's story and God's story with my story?
- If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask them! Find a local youth pastor or YFC staff member and be real with your questions. There are no dumb questions. You may be surprised about how directly God's Word will speak to your question.
- Study the Word daily. As we learned today from Joshua, we should meditate on it day and night. Over time we learn the answers to the questions of life and eventually, this leads to success. (Just look at how following God's principles on money has set thousands free from the bondage of debt...it's so simple!)
How can we connect today's story, God's story and my story with my friend's story?
- Start listening for the questions your friends are asking. Maybe they are dealing with stress, a parent's break up or just aren't sure about what the future holds for them. In each case, you have truth that will help them!
- As you listen for stories, start looking for stories in scripture that relate directly. (An example would be sharing the story of how Jesus showed grace to the adulterous woman to someone who is struggling with guilt or shame over a similar mistake.)
- Think of how God's truth has set you free from various struggles in life or how following it has kept you from those struggles. Then share that with someone! When they see that God's truth works in your life, they will know that it can work in theirs too!

And the Oscar Goes to...
What does today's God's Story Scripture teach us about honor?
Our culture gets excited about movie stars. While they are talented, hard workers who bring stories to life for our own enjoyment, people tend to place great importance on them for being beautiful and famous.
God has a different standard for beauty and those who deserve honor. Check out these verses:
How beautiful are the feet of them who bring good news. Romans 10:15
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called sons of God. Matthew 5:7-9
Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight.
1 Peter 3:4
The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.
I Samuel 16:7
How can we connect today's God's Story Scripture to our lives?
It can be fun to watch the Oscars and see the glamorous dresses and hear the speeches, but it is easy to get caught up in the emphasis placed on Hollywood stars. We can get envious of their looks, their money, their fame. While there is nothing wrong with admiring famous people, when we start to measure our life by Hollywood standards, we are forgetting what God sees as a life of honor.
- Look around you, who do you know that exemplifies the traits talked about in today's verses? Thank them for living lives that honor God.
- Examine your own heart, are you trying to look or act the way the world says is beautiful instead of the way God calls you to live? Ask God to forgive you and then consider what you need to do to change your thinking.
- Copy today's verses onto note cards and hang them in places you will see them everyday and be reminded of your beauty and worth in the eyes of God.
How can we connect today's story, God's Story Scripture and our story to others?
- Discuss the Oscar winners with a friend. Ask them who they admire and why. Share which stars you are a fan of but also talk about the joy of knowing God looks at the heart. He loves you because he created you not based on your beauty or money.
- Tell your friend about the people in your life that you admire and why.
- Share with your friend why you are glad God looks at the heart and not outward appearances.

LONDON (Reuters) - A widely available blood pressure pill could one day help people erase bad memories, perhaps treating some anxiety disorders and phobias, according to a Dutch study published on Sunday.
The generic beta-blocker propranolol significantly weakened people's fearful memories of spiders among a group of healthy volunteers who took it, said Merel Kindt, a psychologist at the University of Amsterdam, who led the study.
"We could show that the fear response went away, which suggests the memory was weakened," Kindt said in a telephone interview.
The findings published in the journal Nature Neuroscience are important because the drug may offer another way to help people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and other problems related to bad memories.
Traditionally, therapists seek to teach people with such disorders strategies to build new associations and block bad memories. The problem, Kindt said, is the memories remain and people often relapse.

Can we really forget?
Hebrews 8:12 (English Standard Version)
12For I will be merciful toward their iniquities,
and I will remember their sins no more."
What does today's God's Story Scripture teach us about trying to forget bad memories?
Regardless of how long our story has been intersecting with God's story, there are memories that we wish and pray would go away. Be thankful today that you have learned from those mistakes and moved on in your relationship with Jesus.
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
- Thank God for delivering you from the sinful nature in which you once lived.
- Thank God for not remembering and holding that sin against you.
- Ask God to help you replace those bad memories with thoughts of Him and his mercy and grace.
How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture and our story to others?
- Find someone who is trying to forget something in the past and pray with them today.
- Remind someone of God's promise from Hebrews 8:12.
- Share with someone who is not yet following Jesus that their life can be made new by connecting to God's Story.

Chimpanzee Attacks, Mauls Connecticut Woman Before Being Killed by Police
Tuesday , February 17, 2009
An out-of-control, 200-pound pet chimpanzee that had recently been given Xanax apparently went berserk and mauled a woman in Connecticut, leaving her in critical condition.
The owner of the former TV star chimp Travis stabbed him multiple times after the Monday attack, but to no avail. Police were called to the scene and say they had no choice but to shoot and kill the pet-gone-wild.
The bizarre scene unfolded in Stamford, when Travis suddenly attacked and tore up the face of 55-year-old Charla Nash, who was visiting his owner Sandra Herold Monday night.
Nash was taken to the hospital with severe wounds and remained in critical condition Tuesday.

You Can Take the Animal Out of the Wild...
James 3:4-10 (New International Version)
4Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. 5Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
7All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man, 8but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
9With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. 10Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be.
What does God's Story scripture teach us about taming out tongue?
This piece of scripture is one of the most plain, straight forward injunctions in scripture. The author of James makes it clear that the tongue is destructive. He starts clear back in chapter one, warning his readers to be careful when it comes to their tongues.
Here in chapter three, he hits the subject again and lingers here to make sure we get it. In the chunk I pulled out, he starts by comparing the tongue to the rudder on a ship. A first century boat would have been about one hundred feet long (a little longer than a college basketball court). Despite its siz,e a little piece of wood directed the boat's course.
Then the author paints a picture of total destruction as he compares our tongues to a forest fire. If you have watched the news at all you understand this illustration well.
The final comparison is to wild animals. The writer tells us man has tamed every animal, but he can't tame the tongue. We learn, though, from stories like today's news story that you never truly tame a wild animal, unless you change its nature. The tongue, like a beast, must have its nature changed, and that can only happen through God's work in our lives.
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
If you are like me, it seems like there are moments when your tongue loosens up and starts speaking before you even know what is happening. This is exactly what the author was talking about. He gives us some clues along the way.
- First, in James 1:19 the writer tells us to close our mouths and open our ears. Listen more than you speak. Memorize this verse so it sticks in your heart.
- Then, in 1:26 he tells us to bridle our tongues. Take a few minutes at the start of each day and ask God to help you keep a bridle on your tongue.
How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture, and our story to others?
We live in a world where people say whatever they want without any consideration for how others might feel about what they are saying. There is no bridling of the tongue in our society, which means there will be many opportunities to bring up the subject with a friend.
- Next time you and a friend hear someone say something that makes you cringe, ask your friend why it bothered them or maybe why it didn't?
- Be honest with your peers and tell them you are trying to be positive with what you say and that you want to listen more. Invite them to join you, and ask them to let you know if they think you missed it. When they see you follow through, it will make a difference to them.

Super human: Howard, Magic's man of steel, has joy for life
Consider the popular big fellow's conundrum: How many 6-11, 260-pound jam-it-in-your-face centers do fans see beaming regularly? They have rewarded Howard's great play and good-natured demeanor. He is the leading vote-getter for this year's All-Star Game, the first player to exceed 3 million votes.
Howard is elevating his game, persona and maturity. In last season's All-Star Game, his irrepressible spirit made him a favorite as he won his first dunk contest. Who can forget Howard, wearing a Superman T-shirt and flowing red cape, impossibly walking on air in pure Jordan-esque flight?
But even Clark Kent had another life - and Howard is beginning to realize that joy can sometimes be tempered with reality.
Last year, he became a father. The mother, Royce Reed, a former Magic dancer, and Howard share custody of their 15-month-old son, Braylon, he says.
The sudden news shocked many because Howard was quite vocal when he entered the league preaching a no-street image and the word of God. At the dunk contest two years ago, Howard slapped a sticker to the backboard with the phrase, "All things through Christ. Phil. 4:13."
"I was a little hurt about some of the decisions I made," he says. "I was kind of hurt about some of the things that were said about my character - what I said when I got into the league and what I did. Then I realized, 'I'm not perfect.' Even though the situation might have been a mistake, I got a blessing out of it. I would never take that back."
Braylon "was almost like a wake-up call. Dwight recognized, 'Hey, I stepped outside my boundaries.' "
"People might say I'm Superman, but at the end of Superman is 'man.' I'm still human," he says. "I still have feelings. I don't fly to the moon at night. I sleep in a bed, see the same stars, breathe the same air..."

Superman...minus the super
Romans 3:23 [NIV]
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God
James 5:16 [NIV]
Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.
Colossians 1:21-23
Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. But now he has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation - if you continue in your faith, established and firm, not moved from the hope held out in the gospel.
What does God's Story teach us about being "superhuman"?
The first thing it teaches us is that there was only one human that walked this earth that was perfect...and it wasn't you or me! The Word helps us know that Jesus was 100% man yet without blemish...tempted but without sin...human but without fault.
Secondly, we learn from scripture that each one of us falls short of that standard. Just as Dwight Howard recognizes when he says, "I'm not perfect", so you and I can admit the same painful truth.
The third lesson from God's Story today is that when we combine these two truths...confessing our imperfection and recognizing His unblemished sacrifice to cover those shortcomings...we can be healed!
How can we connect today's story, God's story and my story?
- Recognize before God that you too have "stepped outside of the boundaries." Confession is merely agreeing with God about that which is true. Spend some time today asking God to search your heart. It may be painful, but that's where the healing starts.
- Recognize before others these same sins...if needed. James 5 teaches us that we are to confess to one another. Is there someone from whom you need to seek forgiveness?
- Spend some time praising Jesus for being the only true super-human who has allowed you to stand before God free from accusation!
How can we connect today's story, God's story and my story with my friend's story?
- The NBA All-star game and dunk contest always stirs a lot of conversations...perhaps it will allow a good opportunity to share the testimony of fellow Christ-follower, Dwight Howard...a guy who is flawed and forgiven...just like you and me.
- It is in our nature to cover up our sin. It has been happening since the Garden of Eden. Can I encourage you to let go of that game of pretend? Let's be real before others. Yes, we should strive for holiness as God helps us...but when we mess up, let's be done hiding it. If your friends see that you are messed up AND can still go to God...it will help them know that they can too.

Buffalo, NY - Continental flight 3407 was carrying 49 people when it crashed into a home, killing all on board and one on the ground. Although the accident is still being investigated, it is believed that ice on the aircraft played a role in its demise. It was also just recently discovered that the plane was in "autopilot" mode when it crashed. According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), pilots are encouraged to turn off autopilot and fly the plane manually in icy weather as they are better able to recognize and sense the changes in conditions.

Coasting In Autopilot
Mark 13:33, 35-37
Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come . . . Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back - whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to everyone: "Watch!"
What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about staying alert?
Have you ever found yourself somewhere, wondering how exactly you got there? There are times that I have gotten ready, left for work, and before I knew it, found myself in my office. I couldn't remember what turns I took, whether traffic was heavy or light, or even starting my car; I was in total autopilot. Sometimes life can become so routine that I begin to do things out of habit, without even thinking or noticing. When we go into autopilot we cruise through life, and like a pilot, we may miss the signs and cues of what is coming. We are no longer sensitive to the Spirit's leading and we fail to experience all that God has for us. Storms seem to come out of nowhere because we missed the darkening clouds that would normally tip us off. We miss opportunities to serve and love those who come across our paths because, with our blinders on, we fail to even see them. And, as Jesus warns in today's scripture, we may easily miss the cues and warning signs of God's return to earth. For this reason, Jesus commands us to remain alert and watchful of all that is going on around us. He explains that no one (including angels) knows the exact day or time that God will return to earth, and we are not to be caught "sleeping."
How can we connect today's story and God's Story to our lives?
- Take a good look at your spiritual life. Are you in autopilot? Maybe you're going to church, reading your Bible, and praying, but you are doing it all out of routine. Has it been a long time since you've seen or experienced the Holy Spirit's leading? Pray and confess it to Christ. Ask God to help you shift out of autopilot and renew your faith.
- Memorize today's scripture. Let it be a constant reminder and encouragement to you to always be on guard, watching and looking for God in everything!
How can we connect today's story, God's Story, and our story to others?
- Intentionally take some time today to look around you and really see the people that God has placed around you. Who might He want you to notice, serve, and love on today? Allow God to use you to point others to Him.
- Pray for the families and friends of the 50 individuals who died in the horrible crash of Flight 3407. Pray that they would truly see and experience the comfort and love of Christ in the midst of their pain and sorrow. Pray that God would be glorified.

CANBERRA (Reuters) - A love story between two badly burnt koalas rescued from Australia's deadliest bushfires has provided some heart-warming relief after days of devastation and the loss of over 180 lives.
The story of Sam and her new boyfriend Bob emerged after volunteer fire-fighter Dave Tree used a mobile phone to film the rescue of the bewildered female found cowering in a burnt out forest at Mirboo North, 150 km (90 miles) southeast of Melbourne.
Photos and a video of Tree, 44, approaching Sam while talking gently to her, and feeding her water from a plastic bottle as she put her burnt claw in his cold, wet hand quickly hit video sharing website YouTube, making her an Internet sensation.
But it was after reaching a wildlife shelter that Sam met and befriended Bob, who was saved by wildlife workers on Friday, two days before Sam, in Boolarra, about 180 km from Melbourne.
Tree, who has been a volunteer fire-fighter for 26 years, said it was extremely rare to get so close to a koala so he asked his colleague Brayden Groen, 20, to film him.
"You can see how she stops and moves forward and looks at me. It was like a look saying "I can't run, I'm weak and sore, put me out of my misery," Tree told Reuters.
"I yelled out for some water and I sat down with her and tipped the water up. It was in my hand and she reached for the bottle then put her right claw into my left hand which was cold so it must have given her some pain relief and she just left it there. It was just amazing."

"I was thirsty and you gave me a drink"
Matthew 25:31-40 (ESV)
31 "When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. 32Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. 34Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' 37Then the righteous will answer him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?' 40And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.'
What does today's God Story Scripture teach us about caring for others?
The first thing the firefighter in today's story did was show up in the area that had been affected by the wildfires. If he didn't go into that area, he would not have found the thirsty koala. Just like that firefighter, when we are out in the world that has been burned by the ways of sinful man, we need to be watchful for those who have a need that we can meet - whether it be physical or emotional or spiritual.
Check out the study notes from the Life Application Study Bible on Matthew 25:34-30 ...
This parable describes acts of mercy we all can do every day. These acts do not depend on wealth, ability, or intelligence; they are simple acts freely given and freely received. We have no excuse to neglect those who have deep needs, and we cannot hand over this responsibility to the church or government. Jesus demands our personal involvement in caring for others' needs.
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
- Take some time this weekend to discover "the least of these" in your community.
- Begin praying regularly for those you who in need in your community.
- Read John 4 for another story of how Jesus quenched someone's thirst.
How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture and our story to others?
- Find someone today who is hurting and meet a genuine need they might have.
- Encourage the one you help to "pay it forward" by helping someone else they know.

Australian officials suspect arsonists were responsible for starting fresh fires in Victoria, as a dozen bushfires continued to burn in the state.
State Premier John Brumby said he was aware of "several" fires being lit deliberately in the Beechworth area northeast of Melbourne late on Tuesday.
More than 180 people have been killed in fires since Saturday.
Bodies are still being retrieved, prompting police to bar residents from returning to some towns.
Amid on-going firefighting plus a wide-scale investigation into the country's worst fire disaster, Mr Brumby said of the most recent outbreaks: "There seems little doubt that these were deliberately lit."
Arson investigators said they had found six main sources of Saturday's fires. They had found one case of foul play near the town of Churchill, about 90 miles (140km) southeast of Melbourne, and a suspect was being sought.
Four other fire sources were not suspicious and one, the Marysville fire, was not yet determined, investigators said.

What kind of fires do you start?
Luke 24:32 (NIV)
They asked each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?"
There are terrible fires burning in the bushland of Australia. Unfortunately some of them were started by a horrible decision that some person made. When we usually hear about fire it is a destructive force and tragic event today's scripture talks about burning in a different way.
The morning Jesus' tomb was found empty two of the disciples were walking to Emmaus and a stranger came up to them. They were talking of all the things Jesus had done and what they had hoped he would bring. The stranger, who was Jesus, laid out the reasons in Scripture that he had to die. Once the two realized that it was Jesus they had been with they responded to each other by commenting on how their "hearts burned" while he was speaking to them.
What do people feel when they are around you? Do you live out the Scriptures and walk with the Spirit in a way that makes people notice in their hearts something is different? Don't you want to live out the kind of life where you know GOD's story well enough and know Him well enough that others feel it?
- Read the whole chapter in Luke from today's scripture and imagine what it would have been like to walk on the road with Jesus.
- Pray that GOD would make your heart attune to the Spirit to recognize him and reveal himself to you.
- Ask GOD to show you in your heart where you need to submit to him so he can refine you.
- Before you hang out with one of your lost friends pray and ask GOD to guide you in your conversations and present opportunities for you to share His Story.
- Pray for the families of the victims in the Australia fires.
- Pray for safety for those in the areas of the fires and the firefighters.

Red Roses Hit the Black Market as Saudis Ban Valentines Day Gifts
Tuesday , February 10, 2009
Anyone in Saudi Arabia looking to shower a loved one with Valentine's Day gifts better be ready to break the law and shell out serious cash.
Religious police in the Arab country are banning the sale of any gifts related to the romantic holiday, driving up black market prices for offerings like the ever-popular red rose, according to BBC News.
Shop workers actually said they were warned to remove all red items from their stores, BBC News reported.
Valentine's Day is one of many holidays that are considered un-Islamic holiday and thus are prohibited by Saudi authorities, the station reported. But it has an even bigger stigma than most, as it is thought to encourage relations between unwed couples, which is illegal in the conservative kingdom.
Still, Saudis seem determined to celebrate the holiday.
Many people order flowers days or weeks in advance in anticipation of the ban, BBC News reported.
"Sometimes we deliver the bouquets in the middle of the night or early morning, to avoid suspicion," one florist told the Saudi Gazette.
Others travel to neighboring countries to celebrate, BBC News reported.

You Can't Outlaw Love.
22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!
What does God's Story scripture teach us about real love?
This segment of the bible comes from the letter Paul wrote to the church in the Galatia province. He writes the churches he started, because there are things he wants them to understand. One of those concerns was the difference between the sinful nature and life lived through the Holy Spirit.
Just before Paul lays out today's scripture he tells the Galatians what the sinful nature is like. He places the two lifestyles next to each other to make the difference abundantly clear.
At the top of Paul's Spirit-filled list is love. From the front cover to the back, love shows up a lot in the Bible.
A few items in the sinful nature list are often attached to "love" in our society. Even though Paul wasn't writing specifically to us today, he would still want us to understand that love is deeper than the physical. Real love endures all things.
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our live?
With the exception of my oldest brother (He's married) my siblings and I celebrate singles' awareness day instead of Valentine's Day. Ads for flowers and candy make it seem awkward at times to be a single person. You see all the couples and you feel like you're missing out on love. This season can really distort what love is truly about. Governments may pass laws against manifestations of love, but it isn't about the flowers and stuff. It's not even about just two people. Real love has a depth found only in a relationship with Jesus. Single or not, here are some suggestion for connecting God's Story with your own.
- Get a good concordance and look up all the verses you can about love. Write down what you find.
- Write a love poem to God or, if you're not much of a poet, read a Psalm to God.
- Memorize 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a
How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture, and our story to others?
Just about every store I have been into this week has been covered in red, white, and pink. Conversations about valentines and love are bound to come up. See them as opportunities to introduce people to God's story.
- With a friend, come up with ways you could show someone you love them if our government outlawed Valentine gifts.
- When you're walking through a store full of red, ask your friend how they define love. Then share with them what you learned from memorizing 1 Corinthians 13.

LONDON - A British university has apologized to a Ph.D. student for throwing away his treasured, seven-year collection of lizard dung.
Daniel Bennett has told Times Higher Education magazine that he had collected the dung in the Philippines while studying the rare butaan lizard, a relative of the Komodo dragon. The material was to be studied as part of his doctoral research.
Bennett says the 77-pound (35-kilogram) bag was thrown away by cleaners at his lab at Leeds University in northern England. He says the dung represented seven years' worth of field work, and its loss "left me reeling."
The university said Friday it had apologized.
Bennett says he rejected the university's compensation offer of 500 pounds ($750) and will "see them in court."

Upset over dung
Philippians 3:7-9 [The Message]
Yes, all the things I once thought were so important are gone from my life. Compared to the high privilege of knowing Christ Jesus as my Master, firsthand, everything I once thought I had going for me is insignificant - dog dung. I've dumped it all in the trash so that I could embrace Christ and be embraced by him. I didn't want some petty, inferior brand of righteousness that comes from keeping a list of rules when I could get the robust kind that comes from trusting Christ - God's righteousness.
What does God's Story teach us about the important things in life?
"Are you serious? Upset over 77lbs. of poop!" That is in quotes because I am guessing that this is what you are thinking...am I right?
Well, before we ridicule Daniel Bennet too much about his obesession with butaan lizard droppings, let's remember that it was 7 years of research that we are talking about...which is pretty substantial. On top of that, most of us have things in our lives that are just as ridiculous about which we are WAY too concerned.
Today's passage is written by Paul who is communicating to us that nothing...and he means absolutely nothing in his life is more important than Christ. He even goes so far as to say that the things he used to consider really important are like dung to him. (That's what I like about Paul...he always speaks his mind quite clearly.)
So why does the Bible teach us this? Because nothing that this world has to offer will last! It is all temporary...empty...meaningless compared to knowing Christ. It will all be gone one day and the only thing we will have left are eternal matters...like Christ, God's Word and all who have become a part of God's family.
How can we connect today's story and God's Story to my story?
- Be honest before God...make a list of all of the "things" in life that you have valued at one point or another. (Popularity, that starting spot on the team, money, a favorite car, that one guy or girl, the new clothes or shoes...) Now, look at the list again...what's on that list that will be of no value in eternity...ya know...almost as worthless as...well...dung?
- Ask God to help you fix your eyes on Him and Him alone. This world is full of tempting things to chase after...ask the Holy Spirit to help you stay focused on eternal matters alone.
- Look up Hebrews 12:2 and II Corinthians 4:18...maybe you could pick one and memorize it.
- The next time you find yourself upset about something...stop and ask yourself if it is of eternal importance or if you are getting upset over dung.
How can we connect today's story, God's story and my story with my friend's story?
- If you see a friend obsessing over something that seems a bit trivial to you...rather than reprimanding them or thinking less of them for this...remember that this is just an indication that they are looking for something more...something meaningful. The good news is that you have what they are really looking for.
- Remember also that your responses to the disappointments in life are a huge witness by themselves. When you suffer loss and still have peace...that speaks volumes to those around you. When your material goods are lost, dented, torn or even thrown out and you aren't "left reeling"...your friends will know that your life serves a bigger purpose and they will want that too.

Hackers make electronic road signs warn motorists of zombies, raptors; highway officials angry.
COLLINSVILLE, Ill. - Hackers are messing with electronic road signs in some states, warning of zombies and raptors down the road. Traffic safety officials aren't amused. The latest breach came during Tuesday morning's rush hour near Collinsville, Ill., east of St. Louis. That's where hackers changed a sign along southbound Interstate 255 to read, "DAILY LANE CLOSURES DUE TO ZOMBIES."
Similar pranks have been pulled in recent days near Indianapolis and in Austin, Texas.
The Illinois Department of Transportation's Joe Gasaway worries that such pranks distract drivers from legitimate hazards down the road, perhaps endangering road crews.
In Illinois, tampering with an official traffic control device is a misdemeanor punishable by up to a $250 fine.

What Did That Say?!
2 Thessalonians 2:7-15 (New International Version)
7For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way. 8And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming. 9The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, 10and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie 12and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.
13But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God chose you to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth. 14He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.
What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about false warning signs?
This man of lawlessness with his power and miracles will deceive those who have refused to believe God's truth. God gives people freedom to turn their backs on him and believe Satan's lies. If they say no to the truth, they will experience the consequences of their sin.
Paul knew that the Thessalonians would face pressure from persecutors, false teachers, worldliness, and apathy to waver from the truth and to leave the faith. So he urged them to "stand firm" and hold on to the truth they had been taught both through his letters and in person. We also may face persecution, false teachings, worldliness and apathy. We should hold on to the truth of Christ's teachings because our life depends on it. Never forget the reality of Christ's life and love.
(Life Application Study Notes, 2 Thess. 2:10, 2:15)
- Pray today and ask God's protection from the evil one and his schemes.

- Be aware of what your friends may be learning from the false teachers of the world.
- Stay in conversations about the false teachings of the world with your friends.
- Find a friend who is struggling with a false teaching and help them to stand firm, by getting into God's Story with them a little deeper.

You've heard it. You've seen it. We can't get away from it. It's in every newspaper headline. It's what they're calling an "economic crisis." Every day another company is down-sizing or "going under," another group of people is laid off, and countless homes go into foreclosure. There are the stories of angry individuals, looking for someone to blame, mothers terrified of what will become of them and their families, and fathers ashamed of their inability to provide. Sometimes it seems as if everything is crashing down at once.
It's in times like these that it seems more and more people, who may have never even thought about God before, are questioning Him and His character: Where is God in all of this? If He really is so good and so loving, how can He let this happen to our family? If this is the way God takes care of us, I don't want anything to do with Him! Even Job's wife, crushed from the loss of her children, her home, and all that she cherished, encouraged her heart-broken and completely distraught husband to, "curse God and die" (Job 2:9)!
So how should we to respond to all of the overwhelming storms in life that can so quickly overtake us?
Picture courtesy of Google Images, 2/8/09
Killer Waves
James 1:2-4 "Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing"
Job 1:21 "The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised."
What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about trials and hardships?
If you know the story of Job, you know how quickly his life turned from nearly perfect, to complete shambles. In just one day Job's children were killed along with all of his servants and livestock. Within another couple of days, Job lost his health, his friends, and the love of his life. It was completely unreal and impossible for Job to comprehend. And, as much as Job felt alone and forgotten, God's eye was on Him the entire time. In fact, God was refining Job and He had a plan. Job didn't have the perfect response to the trials and hardships that God allowed him to face but he was faithful. And although he couldn't understand why he was suffering, Job gained a clearer understanding of just who God is. He came out the fire blessing the trials for all that God had done through them. His faith was refined, his holiness enlarged, his soul was saved, and God was glorified.
What can we connect today's God's Story to our lives?
- Read through the book of Job - as you do, think about how you might respond in his same situation. Would you remain faithful to God, or would you be influenced by family and friends to sin and turn away from Him?
- Release whatever trials you are going through to God. Pray and tell God, as Job did, that you choose to praise Him and bless your trials for the ways in which they will bring you closer to God.
- Memorize today's scripture verses and recite them over and over as you face trials in your life.
How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture, and our story to others?
- Chances are, you know people who are really struggling with life right now. Be intentional to encourage them by praying for/with them. If they are feeling overwhelmed and/or angry about the situation they are in, share the story of Job. Share with them how God brought Job through his trials and how God refined him and their relationship because of them.
- Look for practical ways you can serve those in your community who are needing a little extra help right now - serve at a local soup kitchen, offer to do yard work or baby-sit for free . . . anything that will help to relieve a little stress in tough times.

Groundhog Day: Phil Sees Shadow, Predicts 6 More Weeks of Winter
Monday , February 02, 2009
The world's most famous groundhog saw his shadow Monday morning, predicting that this already long winter will last for six more weeks.
Punxsutawney Phil emerged just after dawn in front of an estimated 13,000 witnesses, many dressed in black and gold to celebrate the Pittsburgh Steelers' Super Bowl victory the night before.
"There's significant buzz from the Steelers win and quite a few Terrible Towels floating from the crowd," said Mickey Rowley, deputy secretary for tourism in Pennsylvania.
The annual ritual takes place on Gobbler's Knob, a tiny hill in Punxsutawney, a borough of about 6,100 residents some 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

Is It Morning or Evening Red Sky That is Bad?
Matthew 16:1-4 (The Message)
1-4 Some Pharisees and Sadducees were on him again, pressing him to prove himself to them. He told them, "You have a saying that goes, 'Red sky at night, sailor's delight; red sky at morning, sailors take warning.' You find it easy enough to forecast the weather - why can't you read the signs of the times? An evil and wanton generation is always wanting signs and wonders. The only sign you'll get is the Jonah sign." Then he turned on his heel and walked away. What does God's Story scripture teach us about recognizing Jesus?
At first glance it seems like Jesus is being a little harsh to these religious leaders. They are just trying to make sure Jesus is who he says he is, right? The problem with this is what happened before they came questioning and asking for proof. Days before they interrogated Jesus, he was sitting on a hillside healing large numbers of people. Then as that day waned, he felt compassion on the masses around him, so he had them sit down. From 7 loaves and a few fish, he fed 4,000.
Now that we have more of the picture, do you understand why Jesus might be a little vexed by their questioning? Here they are, the religious leaders of the time. The people who should be able to spot him, are asking for even more proof. Jesus gives them kind of an odd answer to their inquiry. He tells them they get no sign, but the sign of Jonah. In that declaration Jesus points to his death and resurrection. The Prophet Jonah spent 3 days in a big fish, like Jesus would spend 3 days in the grave between his crucifixion and being raised from the dead.
I would guess Jesus is baffled by our inability to see him. We are always asking for signs, when the whole time he's right in front of us... from the beauty of creation to the difference he has made in our lives or someone we know.
How can we connect today's God's Story to our lives?
Have you ever asked God "Will you give me a sign?" At some point or another I think we all have. Maybe it was for proof that he was there or trying to figure out what choice He wanted us to make. If we really stop for a minute and examine our hearts, maybe He has already shown Himself, and we need to just pay attention. Psalm 46:10 says, "Cease striving and know that I am God... (NASB)" Check for God's answer here sometime...
- Sit still and just breathe for a few minutes.
- Ask an older follower of Jesus to help you search the Bible for answers that God might have given to your question.
- Take a day and tell God thank you for the ways He makes His love known to you (i.e. the Bible, Creation, other people).
How can we connect today's story, God's Story Scripture, and our story to others?
We have all kinds of superstitions for predicting the weather: the red sky at night stuff, or if you see an all brown "woolly worm" it will be a mild winter. One of the most famous is of course Groundhog Day. Will Phil see his shadow or not? We are constantly looking for signs in the world around us. That also means there are lots of open doors for conversation about where we see God.
- You can start simple by asking what your friends think about Groundhog Day. Then ask if they have ever had things they have asked for signs about. Be ready to share your own story first.
- As the conversation moves along, ask if they got the sign and what that meant for them. You can then ask if that was enough proof there was a God or if they still wanted more. Why was it or wasn't it enough?
- Be ready to share with your friend where you see God the most, and the difference He makes in your life.

Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps admitted to "regrettable behavior" Sunday and vowed it wouldn't happen again after a British newspaper published a photograph of the swimmer smoking a marijuana pipe.
"I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way," swimmer Michael Phelps said in a statement released Sunday.
"I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment," the record-setting American athlete said in a statement issued Sunday.
"I'm 23 years old, and despite the successes I have had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner that people have come to expect from me," Phelps said. "For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public -- it will not happen again."
In a separate statement, the U.S. Olympic Committee said it was "disappointed in the behavior recently exhibited by Michael Phelps. Michael is a role model, and he is well aware of the responsibilities and accountability that come with setting a positive example for others, particularly young people," the committee said. "In this instance, regrettably, he failed to fulfill those responsibilities."
However, it added, "Michael has acknowledged that he made a mistake and apologized for his actions. We are confident that, going forward, Michael will consistently set the type of example we all expect from a great Olympic champion."

Bad behavior?...Oh, they're just "youthful"
I Timothy 4:12 [NIV]
Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.
II Timothy 2:22 [NIV]
Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
What does God's Story teach us about what is expected of young people?
Isn't it interesting that "youthful and inappropriate" almost seem to be synonyms in today's story. These are often the same expectations (or lack thereof) that the world puts on young people. It has become the common, and widely accepted, excuse given for any bad behavior or lack of judgment shown by someone who is young.
In today's passage we see that God expects something quite different from us...regardless of age. In fact, not only does God's Story not allow for such an excuse...it calls them to be examples in speech, life, love, faith and purity!
Michael Phelps has been given the responsibility of setting an example that we would expect from "a great Olympic champion". We on the other hand, have an even bigger responsibility! We are living examples of the King of the Universe. We are Christians, which literally means that we are to be "little Christs".
It is commendable how Michael Phelps has responded...with humble confession. Even though we shouldn't buy into the lie that it is acceptable for young people to sin just because they are young, they (like any adult) are going to mess up on occasion. When that happens...go to God, confess and start setting a Godly example from that point forward.
How can we connect today's story and God's Story with my story?
- Stop buying into the excuse of "being youthful" and start leading by example!
- When temptations come...FLEE! Begin to purposely avoid the areas of life that lead you down the wrong roads and set your mind to pursuing a life of righteousness.
- If you do falter, know that there is forgiveness. Talk to your Father about it and ask Him to help you resume your pursuit of the life He has for you.
How can we connect today's story, God's Story and my story with my friend's story?
Talk with a friend about this incident with Michael Phelps and how you can identify with him. Perhaps you could share how you have some mistakes in your past that you wouldn't want on the newspaper headlines all over the world. You could also let them know that, even though you aren't perfect, you too want to be a role model.
In I Corinthians 4:16, Paul says "I urge you to imitate me." Spend some time asking God to help you be as bold as Paul...where your life is one that would allow you to say to others, "Watch me and you will see a model of Christ." This is not to be said in an arrogant way at all...but rather with a humble, yet confident assurance of what Christ has done in you.
Just as God used Paul's example in powerful ways, He will be able to use yours as well...whether you are young or not!

Centerville, Utah - It was an odd scene in one Carls Jr. restaurant on Friday afternoon when a crowd gathered to memorialize and pay tribute to an old friend. Individuals spoke of his faithfulness to them and his support and commitment to the restaurant. Besides how strange it seemed to hold a "funeral" in a fast food restaurant, even more bizarre was the subject of the service: a toilet. "John," as he was affectionately called, was shot dead when a customer's gun fell from its holster and discharged, while the man was pulling up his pants. The toilet died on impact when it shattered into countless pieces.

Putting Johnny On the Spot
Hebrews 12:1-2
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
What does today's God Story scripture teach us about remaining faithful?
Wow! Talk about a poopy job! Who would've thought that a toilet, of all things, would have individuals gathering to testify of its faithfulness and a job well done?! But I supposed it's true: he served his purpose, to the very end. The book of Hebrews is full of those God recognizes for their faithfulness to Him and to their calling - individuals, like Moses who served God his entire life, then died never even setting foot in the Promise Land. It seems like such a waste, doesn't it? But Moses knew that God was bigger than that. He knew that God had called him, he had a purpose, and he set out to fulfill it.
Similarly, God sent His son, Jesus, with a purpose. Jesus knew what he was doing when he came to earth as an infant. He knew his purpose and, as verse 12 says, "for the joy set before him," he "endured the cross, scorning its shame." Despite the hardships and shame, Jesus placed himself in the lowliest position, and persevered. He remained faithful to his Father and to his calling, even to the point of death, because He knew that God had a plan.
How can I connect today's God's Story scripture to my life?
- Start by being real wth God and yourself - ask yourself this question: "What is hindering me from accomplishing the purpose God has for me? Is there sin in my life that has a hold on me and is keeping me glorifying God with all that I am?" Pray and confess those things to God, then ask Him to release you from such things.
- Stay mindful of the things God is calling you to and remain faithful to them, even when it gets hard! Remember that God has a bigger plan than what you can see and understand and allow your faith in Him to help you persevere.
How can I connect today's story, God's Story scripture, and my story to others?
- Talk to your friends about what they think their purpose in life is. You may be surprised at how many people just don't know (or don't believe) that their life can have a bigger purpose! Share what you believe your purpose is and explain the role Christ plays in that.
- Share the story about the memorial service for the toilet - ask your friends what they think people might say about them and who they are, if they were to die today.
