U.S. marks Katrina anniversary

WASHINGTON, Aug. 29 -- U.S. President George W. Bush said Wednesday that recovery is well under way and there's "hope for the future" as the nation marks the 2nd anniversary of the disaster caused by Hurricane Katrina.
"Hurricane Katrina broke through the levees, it broke a lot of hearts, it destroyed buildings but it did not affect the spirit of a lot of citizens in this community," said Bush in a speech during his trip to New Orleans, La.
Katrina hit U.S. Gulf Coast two ago, killing roughly 1,600 people and left tens of thousands homeless.
The whole city of New Orleans was virtually wiped out.
Bush acknowledged the task of rebuilding remains enormous, but noted that there is "hope in the future."
The president spoke of the billions of U.S. dollars earmarked for infrastructure, homes and help people put their lives back together.
He said a priority has been repairing and strengthening the levees that broke during the storm, pouring flood waters into the city, much of which lies at or below sea level.
Major repairs on the levees have been completed, and a further to strengthen them will be finished by 2011.

A future home and city?

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about our real home?
I thought of this passage of scripture because of the second anniversary of Katrina. Who could ever forget the images of the despair and homeless people, especially in New Orleans? Well...I could and I did. Perhaps you did too?
The media coverage is reminding us that there are still people who lost their homes who are still homeless. I doubt that most of us can imagine the feeling of being suddenly "homeless", unless we went to the Gulf area to help and personally saw the devastation in the landscape and looked into the eyes of the victims.
It's so easy to forget the plight of others and go back to being comfortable with our attachment to "things" and our earthly homes. Yes, most of us have "the good life". But you know what? Life changed for over one million people two years ago and it could suddenly change for you or me tomorrow. Are we ready?
Here's the point of today's verses: we should not be so attached to this world, because it could be gone tomorrow and so could we! Our personal relationship with God through Christ is forever. This earthly home is only temporary.
Jesus talked about this in Matthew 6:19-21. He instructed His followers to store up our treasures in Heaven, not here on earth. Our service to Him and for His glory will last. Being Christ-like with kindness and giving to others really honors our Heavenly Father even when the world around us doesn't notice.
Remember, if we are followers of Jesus Christ, this world is not our home...
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
- Thank God for His promise to take all of His children (those who have received Jesus Christ as Savior) to live in His eternal Heavenly home some day! Praise Jesus that you will not be homeless after this earthly life is over! Confess any way in which you have become too attached to the "things" and "stuff" of this world. Ask God's Spirit to daily remind you that this life is temporary. Ask God to show you how to express the love and compassion of Jesus to others in need.
- Live each day with a pretty loose grip on our earthly "stuff".
- Live each day like it's our last, because we could be in our eternal "home" tomorrow.
- Live each day with an attitude of giving and sharing, rather than taking and storing.
- Do a weekly review of how we're doing with the challenge of remembering that this world is not our "home".
How can we connect today's story and God's Story scripture and our story to others?
- Look for ways to help the victims of Katrina, now, two years later. If you need help in finding options you can trust, talk to your youth leader or pastor at your church.
- Pray for the Katrina victims who are still trying to find a home. Pray that each of them will come to recognize that the ultimate home is in Heaven through Jesus Christ.
- Talk to others in your "storysphere" about the anniversary of Katrina. Use it as an opportunity to share how part of God's Story includes the promise of living with Him and never being homeless.

Michael Vick Says He's Sorry

At this stage of a story that certainly rivals any tragedy of Shakespeare’s day - it remains hard to tell if Michael Vick means what he says.
He has nothing to lose. His freedom will soon be taken from him. And just minutes after pleading guilty to financing a brutal and deadly dog fighting operation on his Virginia property, Michael Vick made his first public comments surrounding the case that will almost certainly cost the suspended quarterback millions of dollars.
Before dozens of cameras, Vick apologized for the lies he told his bosses with the Atlanta Falcons. He initially denied having any involvement in a dog fighting ring, but now admits to not only financing - but endorsing the killing of poorly performing dogs.
And then their was Michael Vick on Religion - "I'm upset with myself, and, you know through this situation I found Jesus and asked him for forgiveness and turned my life over to God. And I think that's the right thing to do as of right now."
And while some may doubt Vick's new-found faith, other's say it's not for us to judge - at least on this matter.
Reverend Bill Finch of Rockville's St. Raphael Church tells 9NEWS NOW it's in difficult and trying times when many people seek help and forgiveness in Jesus and that God is in no position to turn his back on anyone seeking forgiveness.
Michael Vick could be sentenced to as much as five years in prison when he is sentenced on December 10th. But it is more likely he will receive between a year to a year and half behind bars when he returns to the Federal Courthouse in Richmond.

Is Michael Vick sincere?

If you grew up going to church, you probably remember parts of this familiar Old Testament story. The Israelites were going to be punished by God for their disobedience and unsuccessful attempt to enter the Promised Land. The consequences? They were going to wander for 40 years in the wilderness! Whoa! That got their attention! But it was too late!
What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about true repentance to God?

14:40-44 When the Israelites realized their foolish mistake, they were suddenly ready to return to God. But God didn't confuse their admission of guilt with true repentance because he knew their hearts. Sure enough, they soon went their own way again. Sometimes right actions or good intentions come too late. We must not only do what is right, but also do it at the right time. God wants complete and instant obedience.
Michael Vick's confession and apology may be sincere or he may be trying to solicit public support in order to play football again in the future.
Only God knows his heart right now.
I hope Vick really has "found Jesus". Either way, he now faces the consequences for his crimes.
- Praise God for being Holy and for His desire for you to be holy! Let His Spirit show you right now any way in which you have been holding back on God and demanding your independence from Him. Confess any self-centered attitudes or actions and receive His complete forgiveness through Jesus Christ's death and resurrection. Praise God for His mercy and grace!
- Pray every day for God's Spirit to keep you sensitive to recognizing sin in your life and to confess it immediately.

- Pray for Michael Vick when you see his photo or story in the news. Even though his actions are selfish and awful, remember that God loves him and wants him to turn from his ways and turn to Christ. BUT maybe Vick has done this already? Pray that his new found "religion" is sincere.
- Use today's Vick story and "finding Jesus" as a way to find out what those in your storysphere are really thinking about religion versus a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Ask them if they think Vick is sincere? Ask them what they think is the real evidence of someone having a real relationship with Jesus? If you're real brave, you can ask if they see this in you?

Spitting Little Leaguers are blow to Coon Rapids' image
Under the glare of the national spotlight, Coon Rapids Little Leaguers got caught with spit on their hands.
After a bruising 9-2 loss in the Little League World Series, two of the team's star players were captured on ESPN spitting into their hands before exchanging handshakes with the team from Chandler, Ariz.
The bad sportsmanship caught teammates, coaches and parents by surprise, prompted a series of apologies, launched tirades in blogs and e-mails and has experts suggesting that this is a "teaching moment" about how to be a good sport.
Parents and league officials point out that the offenders on the team of 12- and 13-year-olds are "just kids," but they also quickly note that they need to be accountable for their actions.
The incident went unnoticed by other players, the coaches and the parents, said Pat Freese, the vice president of the Little League in Coon Rapids. Freese said he was at the game but learned about the spitting only when he got a phone call from someone who saw it on TV.
"We were all shocked, thinking no way could that happen," Freese said. Then he and the team's coaches sought out the video.
"The coaches looked at it and they were disgusted. They were beside themselves," he said. The team immediately issued an apology for the "inappropriate behavior."We recognize that through our actions we have reflected poorly on the community and disappointed a number of people," the team said in a written statement. "In addition, we apologize to the Little League organization and the Little League Baseball World Series."
The team also personally apologized to the players and coaches from Chandler.

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about dealing with anger?
God's Word doesn't say that we should never feel angry. It does teach us that we must learn to handle it properly.
What kinds of situations tend to make you angry? What do you do?
Today's story about the little league losers spitting on the hands of the kids who beat them is a great illustration of our human sinful nature.
Most of us have probably felt so mad at someone that we wanted to spit. In fact, I remember aiming some angry saliva toward my siblings. You too? Even though it wasn't on national TV, my mother caught it and then I caught it!
If we let our anger be demonstrated with a "temper tantrum" (like a little child), we can hurt others and ruin relationships. But if we stuff our anger deep down inside of us, it can result in bitterness and destroy us from within.
Do you tend to vent your anger or bottle it up inside? What happens?
Paul writes about the need to deal with our anger immediately. We can't let it simmer and heat up. Satan will always use our anger to hurt us and our relationships with others.
Don't spit! Begin to work on mending relationships.
- Thank God for His patience with you, even when you're struggling with anger. If you've been stuffing it inside, ask His Spirit to help you deal with it and experience healing from the hurt you may be feeling. If you have a tendency to lose your temper when you're angry, ask Jesus to give you His heart and mind so that you can learn to let His Spirit give you control over your anger. Finally, give the situation or person causing you to feel angry over to God. Ask Him to fill you with His forgiveness, patience and love.
- The next time you feel out of control because you are angry at someone, rather than spitting, swallow hard and let Jesus help you get control.
- For two weeks, keep a written journal of what makes you feel angry. This will help you learn some patterns in your emotions and allow you to be specific in asking God to help you.
- Whenever you are feeling like your anger is getting the best (or worst) of you, spend some time listening to praise and worship music and reading the Psalms.

- Apologize to anyone who has been on the receiving end of the wrong kind of anger from you.
- Use today's story about the Little League spitting as a way to share more of your story with someone you are trying to connect to Jesus. Be vulnerable about your own struggle with anger and share how you are learning to depend on Jesus to deal with it.

Child killer sentenced to death
John Evander Couey was sentenced Friday to death for abducting, raping and killing a 9-year-old Florida girl by burying her alive in 2005.
Couey did not speak during the almost hour long hearing and showed no emotion when the sentence was pronounced in an Inverness, Florida, courtroom.

"[Couey] said one time that when he gets to heaven that he was gonna tell Jessie he is sorry. I got bad news, I don't think you're gonna make it there," the girl's father, Mark Lunsford, said afterward, wiping tears from his eyes.
He also urged his daughter's killer not to appeal the sentence.
"Take your punishment. Be done with it. You want to do something for her, give your life for the life you took," Lunsford said.

Do you believe that John Couey is not afraid to die? There is no doubt that his heart is hard to have done such horrible acts to this little girl. He says he will apologize when he gets to heaven.
I believe that deep down in his soul, John Couey is wondering about his eternal destination.

LONG BEACH, Calif.—Authorities euthanized dozens of sickly cats found in a cockroach-infested apartment shared by an elderly woman and her adult daughter, officials said.
Police found 76 unhealthy cats and four dead ones in the women's apartment when they arrived to mediate a dispute with a downstairs neighbor, Officer Jackie Bezart said Tuesday. She said the two women were being held for psychiatric evaluation.
Neighbor Mary Cuevas told KCAL-TV that cockroaches had swarmed from the women's apartment into her own unit.
"I was at my wits end about this, so I yelled out my window that they were filthy pigs," she said. "And so they called the police and said I was harassing them."
Lt. Michelle Quigley of the city's animal control department, which was called to remove the cats, said responding officers found "bags and bags of just trash and defecation, urine, insects, floor-to-ceiling."
All but two of the cats had to be euthanized.

13 There is another serious problem I have seen under the sun. Hoarding riches harms the saver.
King Solomon was the wisest man in the world according to the Bible. Actually, I'm not super smart, but I know enough to not keep 76 cats in our house! (Dogs would be OK...just kidding you cat lovers!)
Sol's point is simple. If we get too focused on riches, it will cost us! He's really talking about hoarding. What is hoarding? Hoarding is when we obsess to possess! Keeping too much of anything earthly can hurt us.
I don't know if anyone would consider cats to be like "riches", but today's story is a great example of keeping too much.
You and I are poorly mistaken if we think that hoarding some earthly possessions will not be a problem in our lives. We may never go to extreme cat collections, but maybe it's something else like...money...clothes...CDs...video games...food...DVDs...
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
Answer this question honestly: Are you trying to possess or letting God control your possessions?
- If you think you have a problem with hoarding (that is getting out of control) please talk to your youth leader, your pastor or a Christian counselor.
- Do an inventory of your possessions. Be honest. Is there something that you accumulate that gets in the way of your focus being on Christ?
- The next time you go shopping and you're looking for something you already have a lot of...ask yourself why you want to buy it?
Pray right now...Thank God for His blessings in your life. Praise Him because "every good gift is from above"! Confess anything in this earthly life that has gotten in the way of your relationship with Jesus. If you have been hoarding some possessions, ask God to forgive you and He will. Ask His Spirit to enable you to daily pursue intimacy with Christ rather than earthly possessions.
- If you have a friend or family member in your "storysphere" who owns a cat, use today's story to start a conversation about earthly possessions.
- When you are talking with your friends about possessions, look for opportunities to share part of your story about what God is teaching you about the "obsession for possessions".

Bombings are deadliest since Iraq war began
BAGHDAD - Rescuers used bare hands and shovels Wednesday to claw through clay houses shattered by an onslaught of suicide bombings that killed at least 250 and possibly as many as 500 members of an ancient religious sect in the deadliest attack of the Iraq war.
The U.S. military blamed al-Qaida in Iraq, and an American commander called the assault an "act of ethnic cleansing."
The victims of Tuesday night's coordinated attack by four suicide bombers were Yazidis, a small Kurdish-speaking sect that has been targeted by Muslim extremists who consider its members to be blasphemers.
The blasts in two villages near the Syrian border crumbled buildings, trapping entire families beneath mud bricks and other wreckage. Entire neighborhoods were flattened.
"This is an act of ethnic cleansing, if you will, almost genocide," Army Maj. Gen. Benjamin Mixon, commander of U.S. forces in northern Iraq, told CNN. He said that was evident from the fact Yazidis live in a remote part of Ninevah province that has been far from Iraq's conflict.
Some 350 people were injured, but the death toll was put as high as 500 by some local officials.

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us to remember during so many troubling times in our world today?
When Jesus gave these words to his disciples on the Mount of Olives, he was not talking specifically about the current war in Iraq or the ethnic cleansing (murder) going on around the world, but there is a connection.
Every day that goes by brings us one day closer to Christ's return. Wars and rumors of wars (can you say Iran?)) are all part of what's coming - the end of the world as we know it today.
But don't panic! Jesus encouraged his disciples then and he does the same for his followers today to remember that God is in control. If you are a follower of Jesus, meaning that you have received his gift of salvation and you strive to live for him every day, you can have peace in a very troubled world. That's a promise from Jesus!
Also, don't get sucked into believing anyone who claims they know exactly when the world will end and Jesus will come back. Many false teachers have already misled people by claiming to have revelations from God and have given out many dates - none of which were true, because Christ's followers are still here!
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
- Thank Jesus every day for being in control even when the world seems more out of control.
- Memorize verse 7 as a reminder of why you don't need to panic with all the crisis in the world.
- Keep up with what's happening in the world. Look at current events in light of God's Word.
- Don't listen to 'religious' leaders and others who claim to know the exact time of the end of the world.
- Talk to God right now... Heavenly Father, thank you that you sent your Son Jesus to give me life, both now and forever. Thank you that you already know the exact perfect time of when Jesus is coming back to get His followers. Jesus, thank you for your promise to never leave me and to give me peace because you have already overcome the world. Jesus, use your power to bring a peaceful solution to the war in Iraq and the rumor of war with Iran. Give world leaders the insight and courage they need. Give me the courage I need to represent you in a troubled world. In Jesus' name....amen.
How can we connect all of this to our friends and family who need Jesus?
- Keep praying for them by name every day. God often uses change and difficult circumstances to help people recognize their need for Jesus.
- Someone you know may have fears about the future and the end of the world. You could use the current wars and rumors of the coming conflict with Iran to start up a conversation about world events and future events. Don't worry about knowing all about the war or the politics involved or all about the Biblical explanation of the end times. Just give others the opportunity to express themselves. Remember to listen to their hearts. Remember to listen to Jesus guiding your thoughts and words. Simply talk about the peace and confidence you have in knowing that God is in control. This is part of telling your story!

Principal ousted over NYC school ritual
NEW YORK—A public school principal accused of paying a woman to sprinkle chicken blood on the high school in an attempt to cleanse it of negative energy will be fired, the Department of Education said Tuesday.
Maritza Tamayo, principal of the Unity Center for Urban Technologies, paid a woman named Gilda Fonte to lead several Santeria rituals at the Manhattan school during midwinter break in 2006, when students were not there, according to Richard Condon, the special commissioner of investigation for city schools.
A former assistant principal, Melody Crooks-Simpson, said there was a running joke at the school that sage should be used to cleanse the building because many of the students were ill-behaved. But it seems Tamayo took it seriously, Crooks-Simpson told investigators, and had Fonte lead a ceremony at which she sprinkled chicken blood on the building.
Tamayo coerced staff members to participate in and help pay for the ceremonies, investigators said.
Santeria is a blend of traditional African religions and Catholicism and first was practiced in the Caribbean by slaves who were prohibited from worshipping in other religions.
Crooks-Simpson told investigators she didn't attend the ceremony with the chicken blood, but showed up to school a few days later in a white dress to participate in another ceremony because Tamayo said it wouldn't work without her. She said Tamayo charged her $900 for the rite.
Another teacher saw Tamayo, Fonte and another woman, wearing white dresses, performing a ritual at the school while Fonte balanced a silver tray with 40 lit candles on her head, said investigators.
Fonte told investigators she did not practice Santeria. There was no telephone listing for her.
The problem wasn't that Tamayo was performing bizarre religious rituals but that she was coercing her staff to participate, Condon said.

Today's story about the principal trying to clean up the school negativity with a "black magic" chicken blood ritual makes us shake our heads at the bizarre behavior of so many people in our world. While this may make us laugh, it should also break our hearts, because it's another reminder of how Satan takes a small element of truth (Christ's sacrificial blood) and twists it into a pagan ritual.
The result is that deceived people continue to be lost and searching.

Miners trapped: 'You've just got to pray ... and hope they're OK'
It's the place where Julie Jones, a member of Huntington's City Council, came Monday to buy food to cook for the family members of six miners who are trapped in the Crandall Canyon Mine. It is the place where Dwayne Timothy, a miner, stopped to buy water on his way to participate in the rescue operation.
And it is the place where many residents of this town, with a population of less than 2,000, came to ask each other, "Is there anything new? Have you heard anything?"
The task of waiting for news clearly showed on their faces.
Few people knew the miners' names or the current status of the rescue operation — but that didn't matter. For a town that is comprised mostly of miners, everyone has a husband or a friend or a son who works or has worked in the mine, Jones said, and everyone cares.
"Until you get a phone call that says your son or brother or husband is not one of them, you just don't know," Jones said. "And when you get that phone call, it still pulls at your heart. You're relieved for your personal (situation), but you feel for (everyone else) because you know how it is. You've just got to pray, that's all. Pray and hope they're OK."

The big story in the news right now is the fate of the trapped miners. Are they still alive? Can they be rescued in time?
Families and friends are crying out to God for help. At this point, only God knows the ending of this story.
This has me thinking about the stories that will happen in your life and mine for the rest of this year. Circumstances may bring us to feeling like we are trapped in the depths of despair. How will we respond?
Tyndale's LIFE APPLICATION STUDY BIBLE notes give some great advice for us as we consider the unknown:
130:1,2 In the depths of despair, the psalmist cried out to God. Despair makes us feel isolated and distant from God, but this is precisely when we need God most. Despair over sin should not lead to self-pity, causing us to think more about ourselves than God. Instead, it should lead to confession and then to God's mercy, forgiveness, and redemption. When we feel overwhelmed by a problem, feeling sorry for ourselves will only increase feelings of hopelessness; but crying out to God will turn our attention to the only one who can really help.
- Thank God for His best and perfect plan He has for your life. Praise Him that you can talk to Him, anytime, anywhere, for any reason. Thank Him that He will always listen to your cry for help, forgiveness, strength, direction....cry out to Him right now for whatever is on your heart....
- Make talking to God about anything and everything part of your daily pattern.
- Keep a written prayer journal to experience the privilege of prayer with God at a deeper level.

2 arrested in N.J. schoolyard deaths
NEWARK, N.J.—A 28-year-old man and a teenage boy were charged Thursday in the execution-style schoolyard killings of three college students and the wounding of another, a crime that has outraged this violence-marred city.
The arrests came within hours of each other, with police taking the 15-year-old boy into custody Wednesday night and the man, Jose Carranza, surrendering to the mayor on Thursday.
"We believe that others were involved in this heinous crime," Essex County Prosecutor Paula T. Dow said. "We're looking for them."
Officials declined Thursday to speculate on a motive, but Police Director Garry McCarthy said: "There is still no indication of a gang angle in this particular endeavor." Authorities have said robbery appeared to be the motive, and robbery charges were brought against the two suspects.
The four victims, friends ages 18 to 20 who were planning to attend Delaware State University this fall, were shot while visiting in a schoolyard not far from their homes Saturday night.
Terrance Aeriel, 18, Dashon Harvey, 20, and Iofemi Hightower, 20, were forced to kneel against a wall and were shot at close range. The fourth victim, 19-year-old Natasha Aeriel, Terrance Aeriel's sister, survived a wound to her head and is hospitalized. Natasha Aeriel was able to help authorities identify the suspects, the mayor said.

The sin of jealousy has been around since Adam and Eve's boys. We often just think jealousy is no big deal, but it obviously is because it can be deadly!
Though we are not told the exact reason for the LORD not accepting Cain's offering, it does seem that Cain had a problem with his motives and attitude. While Abel brought his best to the LORD, Cain did not. The fact that the LORD confronted Cain about his sin and gave him a chance to do the right thing and Cain refused - proves that he remained jealous. Amazing! Being jealous for God's blessing led to murder!
Paul makes it real clear in the Galatians passage that the sin of jealousy comes out of our hearts when we refuse to follow the Holy Spirit's leading in our lives. Our natural sinful nature produces evil results - one of which is jealousy.

They may notice a change in your life and you may have the opportunity to share your story.

Python sinks teeth into toddler
Christine Abdelmonem wanted her 15-month-old son to get a better look at the ducks waddling nearby in Freedom Park, so she lowered him to the ground.
Before Adam's feet touched the grass, she felt a sharp tug.
Wrapped around her son's leg was a ball python.
She could see the snake, at least 4 feet long, biting Adam on the leg. Without thinking, she yanked the snake away and screamed for help.
Two maintenance workers rushed over. One tried to kill the snake with a shovel and ended up trapping it in a bucket, said Karla Thornhill of Mecklenburg Park and Recreation.
Adam was taken to Carolinas Medical Center. He was fine Tuesday, a day after the attack, walking around the southeast Charlotte apartment where he lives with his mom and dad.
He has bite marks on his leg. The bite of a ball python isn't poisonous.
Abdelmonem remembers crying when paramedics asked her about the snake.
"I didn't know they bit and I didn't know if they were poisonous," she said. "I felt like a bad mother."
"I've been there all my life," she said, "and I've never seen a snake there."
Thornhill, of the park department, said she could not recall another incident where a snake bit a person at Freedom Park, although she said nonpoisonous black snakes have been seen there.
Looking at Adam toddling happily around the apartment, it's hard to believe anything happened, his mother said. He cried while the snake was on him, but recovered surprisingly fast.
"When I pulled it off, he was fine," she said. "I wasn't."

Snakes!

3 But I fear that somehow your pure and undivided devotion to Christ will be corrupted, just as Eve was deceived by the cunning ways of the serpent. 4 You happily put up with whatever anyone tells you, even if they preach a different Jesus than the one we preach, or a different kind of Spirit than the one you received, or a different kind of gospel than the one you believed.
Who were the "snakes" that Paul was writing about in today's God's Story scripture?
Paul was writing this letter to the early church in Corinth. He was warning them to look out for false teachers. Just like Eve was deceived by the serpent (Satan), believers were being led away from the true Christ by "religious" people who were preaching ideas that were not based on the Truth of God's Word as revealed through the power of God's Holy Spirit.
Satan is the master of deception. Not much has changed in the last 2000 years. Today, smooth-talking, smart-sounding, spiritual-like teachers and preachers are putting out messages that people like to hear, but they are based on feel-good, politically-correct philosophy rather than the inspired, Holy Word of God.
Just like the snake that came after the child in today's story, Satan will come after God's children, especially those who are very young in their faith.
So the key is to learn more and more of God's Story. Part of God's Story is that He gave us His Word and His Son Jesus, who is the only way to Heaven. And that's the Truth!
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
- Be careful where you look for spiritual input. There are lots of celebs, events and even churches that are "big" in the news. They can sound pretty good at first, but they are just another form of "spirituality". Religious? Yes. Truth? No, because they are not based on Jesus Christ and the authority of God's Holy Word.
- Study God's Word every day.
- Talk to God about it through prayer. Thank God for His inspired, authoritative, Holy Word. Ask His Holy Spirit to help you learn the Truth and apply it every day in your life. Ask His Spirit to help you recognize what is true and what is false. Ask His Spirit to help you keep your daily focus on the Christ of Scripture rather than on cultural ideas of who Jesus is and who He isn't.
How can we connect today's story and God's Story scripture and our story to others?
- Ask Jesus to give you a heart of compassion and listening ears as you interact with others. Ask them about their spiritual interests. If they seem open to talking about this topic, you could ask them if they think it's possible to really know what is true spiritually? Listen carefully. Be careful not to jump on them with your perspective, but trust Jesus to nudge you if you should share more about your story and God's Story.
- If you have a relationship with someone who is really interested in the Bible, you could show them today's story about the snake and Paul's writing. The bottom line is - stay close to Jesus and He will show you how to connect to their stories.
- Whenever there's a python that comes creeping into your room, pray for your friends who need to know Jesus. OK, so this won't happen very often, but you could still pray regularly for God to protect your friends and family from that creepy master of deception.

Bonds Breaks All-Time Home Run Record
For one spectacular moment, Barry Bonds and everybody cheering him could forget about the controversy surrounding his chase and appreciate the phenomenal feat: 756.
Nobody in the majors not Hank Aaron, not Babe Ruth has ever hit more home runs than the San Francisco star.
On Tuesday night, in his home ballpark, it didn't matter how many of them might have been fueled by steroids or performance-enhancers. Bonds has the title of home run king all to himself, ending Aaron's 33-year reign.
"This record is not tainted at all. At all. Period," Bonds said.
Conspicuous by their absence were the commissioner and Hammerin' Hank himself.
Though he was on hand for the tying homer three days ago, deciding to put baseball history ahead of the suspicions plaguing the Giants slugger, Bud Selig wasn't there for the record-breaker.
Instead, he sent two emissaries, Major League Baseball executive vice president Jimmie Lee Solomon and Hall of Famer Frank Robinson. Selig also issued a statement.
"While the issues which have swirled around this record will continue to work themselves toward resolution, today is a day for congratulations on a truly remarkable achievement," Selig said.

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about living lives of integrity?
Rules in athletic competition exist for several reasons. They make the competition fair and protect the athletes from injury. Most kinds of games include penalties or fouls as consequences for players when they don't play fair or when they are trying to harm someone from the other team.
In today's verse, Paul makes it clear that we must follow the commands or rules that God has given us. His commands are given to us because He loves us and wants us to win the race He has given us to run.
How are you doing at following the "rules" given to us by God, found in His Holy Word?
Barry Bonds was crowned the new "home run king" last night, but he will continue to experience the controversy of whether or not he cheated by using steroids. It's possible that his record will be wiped out if he is proven guilty, or it may stand. Even if the truth is never revealed, Bonds' accomplishment will be tainted because his integrity is in question.
If we ignore or break God's instructions, our integrity in this earthly life will be questioned and our eternal crown will be tainted.
Obeying God's rules not only leads to victory, but it demonstrates our love for Him now and forever.
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
- As you read God's Word, write down at least one command every week that you know God wants you to keep. This will be your personal list of God's "guiding love" that you know will help you be victorious in this life and receive a crown of reward in Heaven.
- Pray every day for Jesus to help you live a life of integrity.
- Memorize today's verse as a reminder to stay motivated while you strive to serve God with integrity.
- Thank God right now for giving us rules to live by and please Him. Confess any of His instructions in His Word which you know you have been ignoring or breaking. Thank Jesus for providing forgiveness and giving you a "clean record"!

- As you talk to friends about Barry Bonds' accomplishment, ask them if they believe he cheated and if he did, does it matter? Look for the moment that Jesus may give you to talk about the truth that only Christ can give us a "clean record" before God. Workers look for dead in bridge collapse
Divers probed murky Mississippi river waters Friday in search of bodies in the rubble of a collapsed highway bridge as the number of people believed missing dropped dramatically.
Swimming almost blindly through the submerged wreckage of fractured roadbed, twisted bridge supports and mangled vehicles, divers faced fierce currents and chunks of floating concrete as they spotted several bodies underwater but did not retrieve any of them.
But officials offered more hopeful news when they announced that only eight people were considered missing in the tragedy, besides the five already confirmed dead.
That was a sharp downward revision from the 20-30 officials had earlier believed went missing when the eight-lane span fractured and plunged into the river below at the height of rush hour Wednesday.
"Those eight people -- and it's a very fluid number -- I hope they're just mistakes, that they're vacationing or something," said Hennepin County Sheriff Richard Stanek, who was leading the underwater recovery efforts.
The body of one man was extracted Thursday night from a car trapped on the pieces of the bridge that was partially submerged, bringing the official death toll to five. Around 80 people were injured.
"There's no sense of frustration. If I had my way I wouldn't find anyone in the water," Stanek said about the divers not having retrieved any more bodies.

24:1-9 The two angels (appearing as "two men...clothed in dazzling robes") asked the women why they were looking in a tomb for someone who was alive. Often we run into people who are looking for God among the dead. They study the Bible as a mere historical document and go to church as if going to a memorial service. But Jesus is not among the dead - he lives! He reigns in the hearts of Christians, and he is the head of his church. Do you look for Jesus among the living? Do you expect him to be active in the world and in the church? Look for signs of his power - they are all around you.
There are many interesting, heart-breaking, and inspiring stories related to the tragic bridge collapse in Minneapolis last week.
It's so sad to watch the divers look for the bodies of the dead in the river. I can't imagine the pain for the families and friends of those killed. They are waiting for the physical evidence of an inevitable reality - their loved ones are gone and will not be returning.
It's also sad that those of us who are Christ followers often live our daily lives as if we have no hope. We approach life's challenges and opportunities as if Jesus were still dead and his body entombed.
The tragic result is that our perspective is usually in the "recovery" mode rather than experiencing daily "rescue" from our Living, Resurrected Christ.
We are Christ's loved ones and He is living in us and He will be returning!

- Remember that the truth of Christ's resurrection is for everyday living, not just at Easter time.
- Take several minutes right now and talk to the Risen One about your needs and questions that are easy to identify. Let His Spirit help you uncover those that are buried in the corner of your soul. Listen to God's heart and you will experience His love and hope.
- Read the whole chapter of Luke 24 and let the incredible power of the story of Christ's resurrection impact your daily story.
